Squeeb CreativePond update... It has New Pond Syndrome, so full of algae bloom, or sludge. Mosquito larvae has just turned up, which is good, a nice first dinner course for the bigger creatures. And after just an hour of putting in a mini reed and lily a damson fly landed on it. elbowcrookerMiller's Crimson candelabra primulas just coming into flower near the pond. Behind them you can just see the yellow flowers of papaver cambricum, the Welsh poppy. Until 2011 it was thought to be a type of mecanopsis. See the right hand photo. The spiky plant is a type of miniature rush suitable for small ponds. Our cats have always enjoyed nibbling this plant, using it as some sort of feline digestive aid. Frank AylwardAny idea what this algae or plant is? It forms green films on top if a nearby pond. Under the scope it forms largish clumps or sacks of cells- maybe 50-100 um or so across. Seems too large for most algae and too small for plants like duckweed. HesperalisThe warm dry spring has brought out the allotment pond damselfly emergence earlier than usual. Suspect this is a small red. I'm not an expert, but would be great as they are nationally scarce. If anyone out there can help out with ID that would be wonderful. Also resident in the pond are two frogs. elbowcrookerToday I did some 'pond dipping ': dragging a net through our tiny garden pond to see what's in there (as well as 100s of common frog tadpoles- see previous posts). I fished out two newts and at first thought they were the usual smooth newts, also known as common newts, but it turns out they are palmate newts. JoUsed a duckweed cure in the pond. Flushed it out first and got rid of a lot of it then dosed. It has had 3 doses so far and, as you can see, it almost, but not quite, got rid of it. I do pick some out too. It says safe for all pond life and plants but it doesn't say what it is which worries me a bit. elbowcrookerFurther to my recent post about frogspawn, I'm happy to report that it has all hatched out. Hundreds of juvenile tadpoles have wriggled free of the 'jelly' and can now be seen feeding on it. They have been joined by a pond snail which is also tucking into this nutritious substance.
