Our final session today takes us all the way to New Zealand where we'll get a look inside Auckland's Laser Foil letterpress workshop, and learn how they worked to create Erno Hajo's award-winning business card.
BLAG Meet: Inside Issue 06 kicks off online at 4pm London time, runs for over five hours, and is completely free: https://bl.ag/meet
I spent a chunk of my weekend 3D printing the small etching press released by the Open Press Project, to give to one of my kids who is studying traditional intaglio printing (and who has access to much more serious presses at school.)

Can anyone help with an email enquiry I've received about the history of the hashtag?
"I've been looking at how the symbol evolved from the abbreviation of libra pundo to what we see today. But I'm finding very little about the visual history of the symbol pre-20th century ... of what printers were using for this symbol — and how — between the 17th and 19th centuries.”
cc @shadychars — perhaps this is covered in your book?
pdfimpose is 10 years old! How did it start?
I was visiting my sister in Switzerland, when we stumbled upon the "Atelier-Musée encre et plomb" ("Ink and Lead Workshop and Museum" https://encretplomb.ch/). It is an awesome printing museum: they have printing presses, from Gutenberg to the Linotype, and THEY USE THEM IN FRONT OF YOU! So you actually *see* their improvements over the centuries. There was also a part about binding, where they talked about imposition…

I don't understand why some print shops ask for sRGB source documents *without* providing a gamut limiting icc profile so you can see what the hell you are doing.
I get taking in sRGB files for non-vector printing. But without that gamut limiter you're guessing what kind of gamut narrowing will happen so you should still have access to an icc profile.
At least, in my opinion as a self-made expert

Computer printing history question: Why is imposition such a pain? At what level is “a page” so different from “this graphic” that imposition is still handled by different software than the rest of page layout?
Historical quirks and links to explanations, vague memories of subtle bugs, all welcome.
#printing #layout #typesetting (not using imposition as a hashtag because it's a lively one with a different meaning)

Love the niche-ness of Mastodon. Thanks to the wonderful people I follow from completely different walks of life, I now know about a #Print / #Printing and #Typography book on kickstarter that sounds right up my street https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/glennf/six-centuries-of-type-and-printing?ref=thanks-copy

HEY #BikeMap ENJOYERS
Had to drop some packages off and found out the UPS store in Kenmore has large-format printing in-house and it's rather more affordable than FedEx.
They do 40lb paper ($5/sq ft), glossy ($6/sq ft), and vinyl ($8/sq ft) and canvas (didn't ask).
That's not worlds-of-difference cheaper but it is better and since UPS stores are franchises not corporate-owned it's not at all UPS stores. But it's at the one in Kenmore.
