I have an open source #golang library and I want to add counters to it.
Right now i am just using #prometheus with promauto but being open source it should be more "generic".
Looking at #otel it seems like a nightmare to instrument compared to promauto.
Anyone have any suggestions or examples?
This multi-purpose blog note may be of any interest if you wonder about running #VictoriaMetrics on #OpenBSD and/or using VMAgent on OpenBSD to scrap #Prometheus end-points and/or to store #collectd metrics in VM using #Graphite and/or monitoring your #GoToSocial instance using #Grafana

Did a little bit of #python to get the Octopus Home Mini data this morning.
With it ending up as #prometheus data I didn't want the deltas that most people use for remote writing historical data. I just want the total usage counter (i.e. the meter reading) at this moment in time and I'll do my own rate queries for graphing.
For a bonus, I've grabbed the live demand gauge for electricity usage too.
Still not sure I fully grok graphql but getting there!

You do realize fascism is Zeus punishing Prometheus for sneaking off with fire hidden inside a fennel stalk right? He sends Pandora as a gift to Epimetheus (Hindsight) who, despite Prometheus (Foresight) having warned him, oh yes plenty of warning, thoughtlessly accepts what was clearly a very bad no good offer.
So, we've been screwed for quite some time; ambition started it, denial assured it. As Hesiod once said: Thanks, Obama.
I took the opportunity of the #GoToSocial upgrade to 0.19.0 to also start polling the #prometheus endpoint using the #VictoriaMetrics vmagent. This lead to identifying a bug (I think) so the gentle devs now have another PR to deal with
Regarding OSes, this is #OpenBSD polling and storing metrics from #NetBSD and rendering them using #OmniOS and #pkgsrc.

If you've tried both Thanos and Mimir, which do you prefer? Feel free to comment why below
So, I've been using Thanos to receive and store my prometheus metrics long term in a self hosted S3 bucket. Thanos also acts as a datasource for my dashboards in Grafana, and provides a Ruler, which evaluates alerting rulers and forwards them to my alertmanager. It's ok. It's certainly got it's downsides, which I can go into later, but I've thinking... what about Mimir?
How do you all feel about Grafana's Mimir (source on GitHub)? It's AGPL and seems to literally be a replacement of Thanos, which is Apache 2.0.
Thanos description from their website:
Open source, highly available Prometheus setup with long term storage capabilities.
Mimir description from their website:
...open source software project that provides horizontally scalable, highly available, multi-tenant, long-term storage for Prometheus and OpenTelemetry metrics.
Both with work with alloy and prometheus alike. Both require you to configure initially confusing hashrings and replication parameters. Both have a bunch of large companies adopting them, so... now I feel conflicted. Should I try mimir? Poll in reply.

Lispector' s posthumous work explores religion, creation, imagination, humility, and so much more as an author explores his relationship with a character he creates.
Man Prometheus is a pain to recover once its data store is in any way out of shape. Did NOT help that it was buried inside Kubernetes inside a PVC.
Thankfully it was only Dev environment today but if this ever pages on Prod we're losing data as it stands.
I'll write something up for a run book but eesh.

Shelley's revision of Aeschylus's "Prometheus Bound" as one element of his argument for artistic freedom is a massive (but hardly epic) poem, full of un-subtle characterizations and a head-scratching conclusion.

Self-Hosting Journey Update!
After weeks of work, I'm excited to share my self-hosted setup! I'm running everything on a Raspberry Pi 500 with Stormux (Arch Linux ARM-based), 8 GB RAM, and a 512 GB SD card (planning to upgrade to SSD or NAS as soon as I can afford it). Here's what I’ve built so far:
Services in Action:
- Development: Forgejo, Code-Server, Woodpecker CI
- Productivity: Joplin Server, Monica CRM, Homepage dashboard
- Monitoring: Prometheus + Alertmanager, Grafana, Netdata, Uptime Kuma
- Networking: AdGuardHome + Unbound, Tailscale VPN
- Tools: MiniFlux, Linkding, TheLounge
- Management: Portainer, Cockpit, Watchtower
Security & Access:
- Caddy + Cloudflare Zero Trust/Access for reverse proxy & SSO
- FirewallD + Fail2ban for extra protection
Emails Powered by Zoho ZeptoMail:
All email-capable services (e.g., Forgejo, Joplin) are configured for reliable notifications.
Backups: Using IDrive's 5 TB plan for peace of mind.
This journey has been challenging yet rewarding! I'd love to hear your thoughts—especially tips on scaling storage or optimizing performance. Let's chat!

Classic, yes, but Shelley's long poem works overhard to propound its argument amid a myth made melodrama.
