#bikepacking trip, day #8. It rained during the night and the morning greeted us with a heavy fog as we climbed the final hundred meters towards Col d'Aspin. From there we descended to Arreau and then up again to Col de Peyresourde. After these two mountain passes we descended along the Pique river and after a final small climb set up the tent. 80 km.

#bikepacking trip, day #7. Finally the heat broke as we had an overcast day with only around 25°C. We passed through Lourdes and then turned towards the Pyrenees, camping at over 1000m right before Col d'Aspin. 60 km.
#bikepacking trip, day #6. We passed through Pau, which will host the Tour de France for the 76th time in a few weeks from now. Another hot day but we had some nice sections along Le Gave de Pau where we managed to cool down a bit.
I wish I paid a bit more attention when making the route, as the V81 cycleway that we followed in some sections takes some detours that we could have done without in this heat.
#bikepacking trip, day #5. We left the Atlantic coast and started heading eastwards, passing through Pas de Roland. The water fountains are more rare than in Spain which requires a bit more planning, especially in this heat. Lovely rolling hills in the countryside. Started seeing the Pyrenees peaks in the distance. 110 km.
Projet E-CHO : sacrifier la forêt pyrénéenne pour faire voler des avions
Suite à la « Marche pour nos forêts » organisée à Pau le 14 Juin 2025, retour sur le projet délirant de production de carburants à base de biomasse forestière, porté par l’entreprise Biochar, impactant lourdement les forêts de tout le quart Sud-ouest et au-delà.
A Lacq, près de Pau, dans les Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64), un projet de complexe industriel porteur de 800 emplois visant à produire des carburants décarbonés notamment pour le transport aérien (e-biokérosène) et maritime (e-méthanol) est à l'étude : le projet E-CHO. Son coût est estimé à 2 milliards d'euros.
Outre une consommation énergétique et un besoin en eau considérables, E-CHO nécessitera un volume de bois colossal : 500 000 tonnes de bois humide, soit 2 millions d’arbres coupés chaque année. La zone d'exploitation forestière envisagée s'étendra jusqu'à 400 kilomètres autour du bassin de Lacq, soit l’ensemble de la forêt pyrénéenne et au-delà.
Ce projet de décarbonation du secteur aérien est présenté comme vertueux écologiquement. En réalité, il menace les éléments naturels indispensables à notre survie : la forêt, l'eau, l'air, ainsi que la biodiversité et le paysage.

Approaching the Spanish/French border at the Puerto de Marcadeau 2541m in the Pyrenees mountain range. No passports needed to be stamped here though. In fact nobody within miles!
There is something that stirs the blood when you cross a mountain range between countries. As we reached the pass, saw the mountains and green valleys of France I spontaneously burst into an extremely bad rendition of "La Marseillaise".
