They're winning.

They have no compelling reason to do that.

Putin needs to rebuild his military after Trump surrenders Ukraine to him.

China needs to match U.S. naval power while it still has a population young enough to do that.

Fascists don't care how many people must suffer and die as they act out their sick fantasies, which they need to promote in order to keep their followers mesmerized and distracted.

And I cannot help but think of chapter 13 in Revelation:

And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. 2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. 4 And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”

5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling,[a] that is, those who dwell in heaven. 7 Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them.[b] And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, 8 and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.

With the "shutdown" of USAID, the State department has ordered an emergency evacuation of all staff from over a hundred countries by Saturday. In their wake they will leave massive chaos. USAID feeds 53 million people a year, among other things. Many, many people are dying because of this, and many countries will never trust the US again.

USAID is a major part of American international soft power. The damage that this is causing can only be described as treasonous, even ignoring the human cost.

To be clear, this evacuation is impossible. Doing it from one country is very hard. Doing it everywhere all at once, even with all available military airlift assets, cannot happen. Regardless, on whatever schedule they do do this, this is not a normal international move. They are telling staff who in some cases have been in country for decades or who expected to be their for the rest of their careers that they have 48 hours to pack suitcases and leave everything else they own behind, to return to a country where they have no where to live and no job.

But then, that's the point.

@Phil This could happen more quickly than you imagine.

Hubzilla, which is where I post from, didn't have boosts until a few months ago, and Hubzilla will be 10 years old next year. Quote-posts were the only way at all to share messages on Hubzilla until then.

On Misskey as well as its many forks, quote-posts are just as much and as firmly part of the culture as content warnings in the summary field on Mastodon.

And nobody in either place checks where a post came from before quote-posting it.

@Phil @Pepijn Keep two things in mind, though:

One, the Fediverse is not only Mastodon. And the Fediverse isn't entirely built against Mastodon either.

Two, just about everything else that can do microblogging in any shape or form already has quote-posts implemented. Only Mastodon doesn't. Some of these implementations are older than Mastodon itself.

This means: Even if you opt out of being quote-postable on Mastodon, this will only have an effect within Mastodon itself. But if I should receive one of your posts here on Hubzilla which has absolutely nothing to do with Mastodon, Mastodon will not make the "Share" button disappear from my menu, and I will still be able to quote-post you with exactly zero problems.

Maybe Mastodon will hide my quote-post from you. Maybe it won't, and I know from personal experience that Mastodon users are notified when I quote-post them. But it can't keep me here on Hubzilla from creating a quote-post of any of your posts or comments.

Nor can it keep anyone on Misskey, Firefish, Iceshrimp, Sharkey, Catodon, Friendica etc. etc. from quote-posting you.

This does not look like an environmentally-friendly technology. How are they going to produce all that electricity and what are they going to do with all the excess heat?

@pfefferle See my other reply for details and an example.

I can get around this by reposting the URL from this account (not associated with the blog) and adding the hashtags in my content. But that's tedious.

Or I can wait for the long-promised #quotetoot feature (or whatever it will be called) to be added to Mastodon's core code, but even then I would still have to reshare everything and manually add the hashtags.

This stupid law has done nothing but harm people and enrich greedy corporations. It did not in ANY WAY protect or encourage "innovation" in technology. That's a FUCKING LIE so don't even bother replying to me with your lame long-debunked arguments about innovation.

We innovated just fine without granting free license to online companies to ignore their ToS and abuse policies.

And again, no mention of the constant rocket bombardment of Israel from both Gaza and Lebanon. The Israelis also have "nowhere to go". The rockets are also war crimes. And what is happening in Gaza would NOT be happening if it weren't for the constant attacks on Israel.

So either suggest a humane solution other than standing by in silence while Jews are murdered simply because they are Jews or shut up.

@decolonialatlas
Reminder that Israel destroyed Gaza's airport in 2001 and have systematically denied Palestinians the basic right to movement. That's why we (and Israeli officials themselves) call Gaza an open-air prison. They have nowhere to go. Nowhere to escape the bombs. This is a war crime. This is genocide.

I should think Donald Trump would have taught us all what happens when you allow dangerous and deceitful "speech" to go unchecked.

It's shameful that our so-called leading universities have student organizations that are ignorant of the facts of the last 20 years of history in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Why should Amerrican taxpayers fund hatred and propaganda that undermines the truth?

Hamas is not a peaceful organization. They only have one goal: the destruction of Israel. What the student organizations are doing is victim-blaming on a massive scale.

Worse, they fail to acknowledge the fact that Israel has attempted everything from withdrawal to full recognition of a Palestinian state to end the conflict (and they've removed settlements twice from occupied lands). Nothing appeases groups like Hamas.

And now we're going to protect student organizations that lie and support terrorist groups that behead babies?

Sorry - there's nothing in the U.S. constitution that says we should do that.

The Palestinian people had the freedom to choose their own way forward from 2005 to 2007. They chose to subject themselves to Hamas' brutal dictatorship. They VOTED to give Hamas power.

Every American old enough to remember that year should be shouting from the rooftops that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

We should not be defending harmful speech that threatens to destroy freedom and democracy.

Disturbing talk on Morning Joe, with two congressmen threatening to cut off federal aid to universities that do not 'crack down' on students' speech re Palestine & Israel. I'm not supporting what the particular students say; neither do I support such threats against speech.
