When a Red-tailed Hawk perched in a nearby pine tree for a few weeks the Cooper’s Hawks that were there disappeared. Once the RtH moved on the CHs returned & have been building a nest in the tree. Here’s my Perpetual Journal art of the RtH & Cedar Waxwings from ‘23.

Master of the Air

I was sitting with my wife on the front porch of her quaint little quilting shop. We have a couple of old redwood rocking chairs, perfect for soaking in the serenity of the neighborhood. Ben and Charlie, our loyal companions, were sprawled out on the porch, lazily watching the world go by.

As I fiddled with my phone, adding a caption to a photo I had just taken of some clouds, two red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) suddenly appeared, gliding gracefully right in front of us. In my excitement, I fumbled with my phone and frantically reached for my camera. I managed to snap just one photo, which would’ve been perfect if the right wing hadn’t been cut off. I did get a couple more shots, but by then, the hawks were flying away—and it just wasn’t the same.

He was pretty chill.
But he definitely spotted me...

hawk ignoring me, so far. in 3/4 view, against the U.S. Smithsonian building. The one tree right there... I saw him fly in and got close enough to snag a bunch of pictures before he flew off.

red tailed hawk locked his left eye on me and looks defiant. or maybe concerned.

We had a surprise clear skies sunny day today, which was unexpected, and I was already outside with my camera, so that was a great coincidence. On top of that I saw many bird species for the first time!

A red-tailed hawk perched on a yellow metal irrigation gate surrounded by tall then tan grass/wheat and the back end of a black cow in the background. A small song sparrow perches on the top of some thin reeds, the sun backlighting the bird and small clumps of fluff still attached to the plant, causing a beautiful glow to surround everything. The heavily brown striped bird has some fluff in its beak and it moved around the thin twigs gathering more.

A backlit Wilson's Snipe moves through some shallow water, surrounded by bare reeds, as it searches through the mud with its long beak. The small bird is striped across its head and back, stretching from its large dark eye to its tail tip, with a white chest and underbelly over its yellow legs. After bebopping around the desert yesterday morning, went over to Harmon Reservoir to start working on my 2025 birding list.

Here are a few of the photos I took while out.

A dark blue and white Belted Kingfisher perches in a bare tree overlooking a reservoir. Sunlight shining down on it makes the dark eye gleam. The loose head feathers are held back, giving it a less punk look than usual. The dark blue band across its upper chest stands out boldly from the bright white belly.

A tall Great Blue Heron stands amid the winter bare sage brush. It's long yellow and grey beak extending out from the white and black head with a bright yellow eye looking out over the sage. The neck is tucked down, forming a slight S above the large grey body. Long loose neck feathers hang like a fringed neckerchief over its chest.

A red-tailed hawk soars in the bright blue sky, its wings spread wide and showing the dark brown "shoulders" and wing tips. The brown belly band is visible against the white chest and white legs are tucked up against the underside of the tail.

A group of six bright blue and one dull blue brown Mountain Bluebirds stand around a low puddle of water to drink. The sunlight is reflecting off the rippled water, lighting up the birds above and below and making their blue feathers gleam. The water also reflects the birds as they stand on the small mounds of mud.

I think this is a juvenile red-tailed hawk. Never turned enough for me to see it's chest, but I did get a picture of it's open wing with the dark shoulder.

But I just loved where it perched so had to get as many pictures as possible.

A medium sized dark brown bird with a white and brown speckled back, wing tips that end just above the tail tip, and a dark and light brown striped tail, perches at the top of a weathered wooden post. A bright yellow eye looks out over a sharp hooked beak. Below it is an angled wooden beam that supports the gate below. In the background, a winter brown pasture stretches off into the distance, before hills rise up to fill the image.
