Today in Labor History May 3, 1968: The first battles of the May Upheaval began in the Latin Quarter of Paris. The police arrested 500 students meeting at the University of Sorbonne to protest repression at Nanterre. Revolt broke out along the route taken by police vans, with thousands fighting against the police. Throughout the month of May and part of June, workers and students occupied schools, factories and offices. By mid-May, 10 million workers were on strike.

Hey folks! You probably heard that Discord is speeding up toward enshittification (if not, long story short: public company soon), and maybe you've been wanting out. (You probably *should* at least create a plan B asap even if you go on using Discord as your "main base", just to be safe.)

We did a bit of research with a friend and tested the two most popular alternatives (Matrix/Element and Revolt), here's the write-up of our tests and opinions: legaosaure-stuff.neocities.org

We did our best to keep it focused on what a not especially techie Discord user would feel useful, and we hope it can help people feel more at ease with at least one option! Feel free to share around =)

(Also feel free to reach out if you find typos, broken links, or outright mistakes. We did our best but it's more than one paragraph of writing so there's probably something ^^)

@emma@shrimp.emmabyte.de @forse@kolektiva.social @xgranade@wandering.shop #TeamSpeak is proprietary, so I wouldn't consider that a viable alternative. #Revolt is free software and self-hostable, but last time I checked the setup you get by following their documentation does not include working voice. I hope they will fix this in the near future.

#Mumble has served me and my friends since before #Discord was made, and is likely to outlive it, just as it has outlived many other voice chats before it. It also comes with far superior mic and sound controls, to better filter out background noise. I've not seen any web-based voice chat service handle this well, if at all.

Today In Labor History April 7, 1804: Haitian general, Toussaint Louverture died on this day. He was one of the most prominent members of the Haitian revolution for independence from France. The slave revolt against the French began in 1791 with the call by Dutty Boukman, a vodou priest. Encouraged by the French and American revolutions. Louverture led 100,000 enslaved Haitians in revolt, winning their freedom in 1793. In 1804, Haiti became first free black republic in the world. The U.S. refused to recognize Haiti for the next 70 and France extracted millions in restitution, destroying any hope of ever moving out of deep poverty. Louverture was betrayed in the end and died in prison. For a fantastic history of the Haitian Revolution, read “The Black Jacobins,” by C.L.R.James.

ICE is randomly detaining people without any sort of plan or justification. It doesn't matter where you are from, or what your nationality is. Lastest WTF is detaining a Tahitian francophone, traveling to see family in Hawaii. Detained without family knowing anything, basically just disappeared. ICEs plan? Continue to detain until their return flight to Tahiti in 3 months. WTF? Tell me how this is useful? If you are working in these facilities, it's your duty to DO NOT COMPLY.
Anyway, the family finally found out where she is, but she's still just sitting there. #resist #revolt #revolution

Today in Labor History March 1, 1921: Anarchist and leftwing communist soldiers, sailors and civilians rose up against the Russian Bolsheviks in the Kronstadt uprising. The rebellion, which lasted until March 16, was the last major revolt against the Bolsheviks. It began when they sent delegates to Petrograd in solidarity with strikes going on in that city, and demanded the restoration of civil rights for workers, economic and political freedom for workers and peasants, including free speech, and that soviet councils include anarchists and left socialists. The Bolshevik forces, directed by Trotsky, killed over 1,000 Kronstadt rebels in battle, and executed another 2,100 in the aftermath. As many as 1,400 government troops died in their attempt to quash the rebellion.

Today, for Black History Month, we remember Hiram Rhodes Revels who, on this date, February 25, 1870, was sworn into the U.S. Senate, becoming the first African American ever to sit in Congress. He was a Republican from Mississippi. His cousins were killed participating in John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry. During the Civil War, he helped recruit and organize two black Union regiments. When he first arrived at the Senate, southern Democrats refused to let him sit, arguing that the Dred Scott decision, in 1857, ruled that he wasn’t a citizen and had no right to serve, despite the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, which gave him birthright citizenship

Just made an account on #Revolt (the #Discord #opensource alternative)

If you wanna chat with me in a less restricted-by-characters kind way, then feel free to add me there until one day I forget I even have an account there and you're left alone.

I know there's a lot out there who had me on Discord before I left there, so now's your chance to use what is basically a carbon-copy!
