Erik L. Midtsveen 🏳️⚧️🇳🇴<p>Two hundred years ago, most people did their shopping close to home. Local markets, general stores, and small specialty shops were common, especially in towns and cities. These places sold everything from food and clothing to tools, and often doubled as gathering spots where neighbors exchanged news and socialized. For those in rural areas, peddlers and hawkers brought goods directly to people’s doors or villages.</p><p>Today, shopping usually means driving to large malls or big-box stores, which are often far from where people live. The convenience of walking to a local shop has mostly disappeared, replaced by car trips and a focus on buying more and more. This shift has changed daily routines and made shopping less about community and more about consumption.</p><p>This is part of why I really dislike roads, especially when they cut through neighborhoods or replace them entirely just to make way for new routes to shopping centers. It’s frustrating to see communities disrupted or lost so that it’s easier to drive to the next big store.</p><p>Luke Smith also talks about abolishing roads in the video below, and I agree with his points.</p><p><a href="https://videos.lukesmith.xyz/w/oDMNCBQwR1F8hmfdouco9H" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">videos.lukesmith.xyz/w/oDMNCBQ</span><span class="invisible">wR1F8hmfdouco9H</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/AbolishRoads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AbolishRoads</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/Roads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Roads</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/Road" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Road</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/Consumerism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Consumerism</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/ShoppingMall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ShoppingMall</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/ShoppingCenter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ShoppingCenter</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/Mall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mall</span></a></p>
