Coincidentially, that's why #Android (and #iOS) doesn't let users have #root access because billions of devices owned by mostly "#TechIlluterates" thathardly get #SecurityUpdates would be an even bigger risk if they didn't boot a locked-down #ROM image, thus only allowing for #malware in user-privilegued userspace!
Cuz having a mobile OS that shoves everything through #Tor and only allows #userspace-Apps in the form modern web technologies would be a big #security and #privacy gain.
In case USA provides even more surprises, can Europe run our own root name servers as an alternative to root-servers.net
, since .net
zone is operated by VeriSign, and .org
(hosting root hints) by Public Internet Registry, which are both US entities?
Correction: root hints are on .net
domain too, IANA only links to actual file.

The #MastoPrompt for Wednesday 5 March 2025 is:
The poem or story can include the prompt word or be about the prompt word.
@ me, if you like, or just include the #MastoPrompt tag (to allow people to follow or filter their feeds), or keep your work to yourself - all the options are good as long as you're writing.
If you're including an image please do include alt-text if you’re able to.
Today's Wandering Shop Stories #prompt is #root. Feel like writing something short and sweet that has the word "root" in it? Check out the definitions of the word at: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/root Join in and tag it with #wss366! #writing #WritingLife #microfiction h/t @tobadzistsini
How about some #free #PlantScience for your Friday?
In this sneak peek of their new study, Zhang et al. reveal how scaffold protein RACK1 regulates #root #growth and gravitropic response.

Just read the paper "The Roots Go Deep", until I suddenly realized something from my teenage days: My first big moment of networking was, when I stopped using a public #DNS resolver and hosted my own recursive resolver in my #homelab (not exposed to the Internet because it was all way too scary back then). The thrill I felt when my own resolver was talking to #root servers and resolving domain names without using any of the large providers was phenomenal. I know, I know, I was a nerd. Yet, I believe this was a shaping moment of my future path. Since then I was amazed by #network protocols and #internet infrastructure.
Funny, how those little side quests while in school can kick off an entire future carrier path.
Some vendors try to prevent you from using your hardware any way you see fit. Some even go as far as to violate the #license. #Fritzbox got sued in Germany and lost and has to comply with #LGPL. Well, we publish all our sources on our #GitLab and give everyone #root account on their device, so I guess we are safe

Hi #Fediverse, let's start our journey here with our #introduction. We are #Turris project by #CZNIC. We develop and produce #opensource #wifi #router with focus on #security running #Linux distribution based on #OpenWrt. Of course, we provide automatic #updates and #root accounts. We have a #network of #honeypots running on our devices and create a dynamic #firewall based on the data.
Anyway.. pouring another beer before I log on as #root
Broke out #Root for the first time in ages to play against the Duchy and Marquise clockwork factions. Gave the Corvid Conspiracy a go for the first time, they’re a fun little group of terroris- I mean birdies. I imagine they’re quite a bit more exciting when played against humans.

Good morning.

I was just thinking that I need to hurry because I have an appointment to make, but the appointment is tomorrow. I have time. Except it is almost mealtime and Charlie is whining.
I watched Quiet Place Day One on Paramount+ last night, it stars Lupita Nyong'o as the main character. It takes place in New York City, like so many movies, and involves a quiet evacuation across a river. Apparently, the monster can't deal with deep water. Hmmm ... too many spoilers already. I thought the movie was pretty good, though not so terrifying. But that is just me, I watch a lot of horror movies and am not so easily startled. The acting was superb.
“Horror was rooted in sympathy . . . in understanding what it would be like to suffer the worst.” - Joe Hill, Heart-Shaped Box
That's not to say that #android is a great OS for #FOSS
There's still the binary blobs for the majority of devices, device vendors who make modding their device miserable, and the app ecosystem, that whenever someone spelunks just outside of #fdroid is downright hostile towards #root and custom ROMs.
#linuxmobile will be an improvement in the long run, and I greatly enjoy the nicer environment of #gnulinux
I just feel that people tend to ignore just how good FOSS on android is *right now*.
I love how #trees can grow out of cracks in boulders. Seems almost impossible. Check out this beauty-- passed it while #hiking last week on a mountain that was mostly #rock. It seems just fine growing out of the crack in this massive boulder. Mt.
