Seeing mountain gorillas in the wild is a magical bucket list experience for many travelers to Rwanda, but it hasn’t always been possible. Poachers decimated gorilla numbers in the 1960s and 70s. Then came the Rwandan genocide in 1994. @BBCNews has more on the global success story of mountain gorilla conservation, partly due to the annual celebrations of baby gorillas being born.

In the Great Lakes region, hopes for a ceasefire in the strategic Congolese town of Walikale, seized by M23 rebels last week, briefly raised hopes of reviving stalled diplomatic efforts. Rwanda welcomed the move, reaffirming its commitment to a political solution. But the fragile truce appears to be unraveling, and mediation efforts are losing momentum … just as regional leaders prepare to meet to discuss the crisis.#Africa #EyeonAfrica #Rwanda #DRCongo #M23rebels #peacetalks #Sudan #war #Chad #AbdelFattahal-Burhan #Tunisia #music

And another story of life in a war zone: This time in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a militia group called M23 has seized control of Goma, which borders Rwanda. It’s easier to cross the border now, but the banks in Goma have closed, and small-scale women traders are struggling. @thecontinent tells the full story.

Actually dealing with cases which a previous administration refused to handle - pending deportation to #rwanda - seems to be a pretty clear improvement to me. Integrating asylum seekers into local communities while they await a decision rather than leaving them isolated at the mercy of a dodgy private contractor does not look too bad either. Both seem well worth a try.
