Time for an #Introduction post. I’m a #liveaboard #sailor (www.svloka.com) and full time #nomad who is also a #creative #artist. I play #guitar, #crochet, paint (#watercolor & #acrylic), and draw #penandink. I love #yoga and use #meditation to manage my #anxiety. Got #sober in 2020.
I am a recovering #softwareengineer (#programmer) and #ITmanager. I focused a lot on #leadership & effective #communication, and I still enjoy #mentoring people on those topics. I still tinker with tech on occasion.
This Morning’s earworm:

For some reason
Inked up my bent /fude nib Sailor Profit pen with the waterproof Octopus Write & Draw black elephant ink, with some quick watercolours over top. Ink is flowing nicely, and if my other pens are any indication not expecting it to slow down soon, so looks promising to me!
I had tried some other waterproof inks before, but they were either cloggy in this one (Carbon Black) or not terribly waterproof when brushed over during watercolours (Noodlers, Sailor)

In the aforementioned video, while leaving the Grand Banks, heading to St John's Newfoundland, the Navy ship, HMCS Ottawa stumbled upon a floundering Fishing Boat.
They might have been lost forever, had we not discovered them by accident.
They had lost power. Once the shaft stopped turning, electricity was lost too , and radio power for distress calls.
New balance stretching record attained;
LEFT leg 3 mins 15 secs ,
RIGHT leg came in 2nd place just over 2 min.
I'll work on my right balance more. I still can't believe that I just fall over, if my eyes close.
I'm behind on my #StoryTime #Thread

Today in Labor History November 21, 1910: Sailors on board Brazil's warships mutinied in what is now known as the Revolta da Chibata (Revolt of the Lash). The sailors, who were mostly Afro-Brazilian, were protesting the use of whips by white naval officers when punishing them. Nearly half of the 4,000 sailors on these ships participated in the mutiny. Several officers who attempted to resist were killed. The rebels sent a telegraph to the president, reading "We do not want the return of the chibata [lash]. They threatened to destroy the city if the President of the republic and the Minister of the Navy didn’t cede to their demands. And they fired on army forts around Guanabara Bay, and at the naval arsenal and bases on Ilha das Cobras and Villegagnon Island, as well as the presidential palace. Ultimately, the Brazilian government granted an amnesty for the mutineers and the conflict ended without further violence. However, as soon as the mutineers came ashore, the government disarmed the ships, to prevent any further mutinies, and most of the men were discharged from the navy.

Today in Labor History August 25, 1775: Two thousand Liverpool seamen ignored the reading of the Riot Act to free nine of their fellow workers who had been imprisoned for wrecking a ship after being paid short wages. Over 2,000 surrounded the prison. It turned into a full-on revolt, with workers de-rigging all the ships in port, making them unable to sail, and levying money from local merchants. After several demonstrators were killed at the Liverpool Exchange, they raided warehouses and gunsmiths for arms and seized two cannons from a whaling vessel, with which they bombarded the Liverpool Town Hall. At the time, there were 3,000 unemployed seamen in Liverpool and wages had been slashed by 33% as a consequence of the American Revolution and decline in the slave trade that came with it. They had begun their protest peacefully, cutting down rigging and marching, unarmed, on the Town Hall. The merchants, however, had hired armed thugs, who gunned down protesters without provocation, killing up to seven, provoking the sailors to seize arms and cannons, and fire on the Town Hall. The government sent in troops who eventually quashed the rebellion, arresting 40-60 sailors. Only 12 were indicted and all were released after agreeing to enlist in the navy.
Today in Writing History August 1, 1819: Herman Melville was born. He was one of the greatest American writers of all time. The death of his merchant father in 1832 left his family destitute. So, he became a merchant seaman, having many of the same brutal and exploitative experiences other seamen had in those days. Rum, sodomy and the lash! Consequently, he jumped ship in the Marquesas and lived with the local indigenous people. His first two books, “Typee” and “Omoo,” were about these experiences. His two greatest stories of all time, “Billy Budd,” and “Moby Dick,” were also influenced by his experiences as a seaman.
Melville also explored a variety of sexual themes in his writing, including homosexuality, celibacy, incest and impotence. Though his most famous works involve nearly all-male casts, he does explore the exploitation of women in “The Tartarus of Maids.” Homosexuality, in particular, was a common theme in many of his stories (e.g., Typee, Omoo, Redburn, Moby Dick, Billy Budd). Indeed, it is commonly believed that he was either gay or bisexual. He had a wife and kids, as well as long, romantic relationship with Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Today in Labor History July 31, 1970: British sailors were given their very last officially sanctioned ration of rum. Black Tot Day took away from sailors one of the very few remaining benefits of the job. The lash has never been formally abolished. And sodomy was never officially permitted.
