Emilia Jarochowska 🇺🇦🌱<p>Many people think the history of the Earth is hard to decipher. The geological record jumbles everything up. We set out to fact-check this in my ERC Starting Grant MindTheGap. Focusing on the mode of evolution, because that is something that we can only glean from long records, longer than anything accessible to observation or experimentation today.</p><p>Thanks to collaboration with Peter Burgess we used forward models to simulate formation of carbonate rocks and see how completeness and stratigraphic resolution affect the reconstructions. Guess what! The geological record is 👌🏻 With a bit of understanding of <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/sedimentology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sedimentology</span></a> and <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/physics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>physics</span></a> we can test is with computer experiments and it turns out even very patchy rock strata will let us reconstruct the correct mode of evolution. John Faithfull🌍🇪🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🧡 ✊🏼✊🏿<p>These mini-source-to-sinks are quite common - here are some beauties from a different beach, on the north coast of the Ross of Mull. I think they may be associated with almost invisible large, low-angle ripples on the sand surface, with the branched erosive head on the steep down-beach face of one ripple, and the lobed termination at the trough, or base of the upslope, of the next ripple down the beach. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Sand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sand</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Geology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Geology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Sedimentology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sedimentology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Beaches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Beaches</span></a></p>

After the last few days dogwalking on Ross of Mull beaches, I'm a bit obsessed by these mini examples (typically 15-30 cm long) of "source to sink" erosion, transport, and sedimentation. Each of these little systems has branched headwall erosion at the upslope end, a narrow, straight transport channel, and a lobed fan of deposition at the bottom end.
