lemmy.worldATT SMTP port 25 unblocking - Lemmy.WorldI was trying to set up mail for my server, to send status emails, gitlab emails, etc. I know this can be done with relays but I was interested in sending mail directly using SMTP. Apparently my ATT residential internet blocks outbound signals on that port by default, although there are several reports of people calling customer support and getting that changed. The most recent thing I can find was someone on Reddit 3 years ago: > xnojack: Probably depends on the rep. Just got mine unblocked a week ago. I read online though its better to say you’re looking to allow SMTP outbound rather than port 25 outbound. Cause on the reps end its called something like SMTP outbound filter. Anyways, I was wondering if any of you have gone through this process recently and know if this is still a thing, or have any advice.

Question to the home lab and self hosted communities: what's the go-to cloud backup service these days? I've been using Backblaze, but there have been some controversies about their future. Are those irrelevant?

Additional context: I need to run backups both from Linux (doesn't matter the tool) and Synology (their native backup tool).

The only solution I found was called gmrender-resurrect [https://github.com/hzeller/gmrender-resurrect] which seems like it would do exactly what I want but I was unable to get a docker container [https://hub.docker.com/r/leakypixel/gmrender] of it working. While I was able to find and connect to the DLNA Renderer, playback would fail every time and I was unable to get any information from the logs regarding why. Do any of you know another solution to stream audio from my phone to my server (I am using Symfonium on the phone side)? Ideally it would be something I can deploy as a docker container on my server. Thanks.

lemmy.mlKeeping track of different targets in terminal - LemmyI’m just using the Cosmic Terminal that’s part of the Pop!_OS Cosmic Alpha, but I ran into similar issues with Gnome terminal and even with Termius. Scenario: I’m currently working on leveraging a VPS to act as the gateway to my homelab so I have one ssh session to Unraid server and one to VPS. One in each tab. Obviously the name shows up as what the username@servername is called in each tab. But I keep getting tripped up and sometimes try to do something from the wrong machine. Once I even failed to realize that the ssh session to one of them cut out and I was back on my desktop and took me an embarrassingly long time to realize why stuff was failing. So what are y’all using to keep that organized in your work flow? Separate terminal windows instead of tabs? Some shell customizations to make them look different than one another? Or just so ingrained in your brain that you never have this problem?

twun.ioHow big is your media library? - TwunioBackground: I’ve been writing a new media server like Jellyfin or Plex, and I’m thinking about releasing it as an OSS project. It’s working really well for me already, so I’ve started polishing up the install process, writing getting started docs, stuff like that. I’m interested in how other folks have set up their media libraries. Especially the technical details around how files are encoded and organized. My media library currently has about 1,100 movies and just shy of 200 TV shows. I’ve encoded everything as high quality AV1 video with Opus audio, in a WebM container. Subtitles and chapters are in a separate WebVTT file alongside the video. The whole thing is currently about 9TB. With few exceptions, I sourced everything directly from Blu-ray or DVD using MakeMKV. It’s organized pretty close to how Jellyfin wants it. What about you?

Depending on the specific use case, it could take as little as 3 years to breakeven in terms of CO2 if both systems were at max power draw forever, and as long as 30 if the systems are mostly at idle.

And there are even more odds and ends I’ve written that do things on my home network. A one-person maintenance team runs into serious memory limitations, particularly for the services that just run fine for years at a time. After running into the frustration of forgetting how to run Nextcloud upgrades on the command line for the nth time, I realized it was time to write a tool. The system wayfinder is what came out of that frustration. It lets you leave notes and commands in place around your infrastructure. After dogfooding it a bit, I was delighted when it saved me a ton of trouble dealing with one of my docker containers. I took some time to work on it proper, wrote it up, and put it on GitHub, even though it is still a pre-release. Would you use a tool like this? What else would you want in it?
