Help required please. Lend me your ears....

If anybody has a spare 8 minutes I'd love to hear what you think the best sounding of these two are.

The first is a straight recording direct off the turnable with no tweaking at all.

The second has a 12.4KHz Low Pass filter applied.

Thanks!

There are a number of types of varnish!
Shellac originated from shell-lac, an emulsion from a type of insect!

"Shellac is a very widely used single-component resin varnish that is alcohol-soluble. It is not used for outdoor surfaces or where it will come into repeated contact with water, such as around a sink or bathtub. The source of shellac resin is a brittle or flaky secretion of the female lac insect, Kerria lacca, found in the forests of Assam and Thailand and harvested from the bark of the trees where she deposits it to provide a sticky hold on the trunk."

Shellac is the primary binder in india inks. (This name being a misnomer, a silk road era sourcing nomenclature of a product which originated from china. Known in other places as 'chinese ink.')

Non toxic india inks are colloquially considered safe to use for tattooing! Is it true? How many tattoos contain bugs resin?

Can you eat shellac?
You can eat most things if you try!
...but generally, it is not great to eat varnishes.

A long shot I know, and the way my luck’s been running recently I’m definitely not building my hopes up!
I wondered if any fellow Mastodonians might possibly have a couple of 78rpm record sleeves like this stored away and they’re willing to part with them? It’s the sleeves I’m after really, not the records. If you have any, could you possibly let me know as I’m more than willing to buy them. Thank you!

“At times, this could make it difficult to write about Shellac, as Pothast discovered when she almost persuaded bassist Bob Weston to play her some of To All Trains down the Zoom call, ahead of its imminent release. In the end, Weston couldn't be persuaded. "It just sounds like another Shellac record, he offered. "It's the same three guys in the same studio."”

Steve Albini. Fond memories of the many times #Shellac was in town. When there was time in the tour schedule, they would invite everyone back for pancakes on Sunday, and a morning show. It’s nice to see the letters, kranky takes, and tales of Bob Weston saving the day by salvaging a power supply to continue recording as scheduled. Guy was punk, and like many aging punks, needs more rest than they know. Fuck heart attacks. #SteveAlbini

Steve Albini, #Nirvana producer & #AltRock royalty, dies at 61

#SteveAlbini, a #Chicago-based #rock #producer allied w/ Nirvana & against the #corporatized #MusicIndustry, has died of a heart attack, per Taylor Hales, the manager at Albini’s studio Electrical Audio Recording.

Albini got the best from many notable #AlternativeRock acts of the 1980s & ’90s, including the #Pixies & the #Breeders. He also played in the bands #Shellac & #BigBlack.
