Damson 🌱Here are four of the most exciting insect sightings we had while I was on my fedi break (and thank you <a href="https://flipping.rocks/@lemondisco" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@lemondisco</a> for letting me post your photos):1. Tansy Beetle (Chrysolina graminis): We'd previously seen just one tansy beetle ever, but on the day this photo was taken we saw six! Tansy heaven 💚 2. Rosemary Beetle (Chrysolina americana): I've wanted to see one of these for a while, as I really like their maroon-and-green striped colouring. There were tons of these on the rosemary plants in the herb garden at York Cemetery.3. Hairy Shield Bug eggs (Dolycoris baccarum): We've had the adult bugs in our garden for a while, but getting to see the eggs is a real treat, especially since these are on a plant right next to our front door. Can't wait to see them hatch!4. Woundwort Shield Bug (Stagonomus venustissimus): new to us, and so pretty! These are so small I actually thought it was an instar of a different species, not an adult. Damson 🌱I've recently finished reading the Collins New Naturalist Library book on Shieldbugs by Richard Jones, which was very enjoyable and definitely worth reading if you are a shieldbug newbie like me. I particularly enjoyed the author's sense of humour, and my favourite example is that in a passage about the relative lack of shieldbug representation in art and literature, Jones says that he couldn't find any shieldbug poems, so he wrote his own, as follows:A shield bug as green as a leaf Found a frond and laid eggs beneaf. MattFocus stacking is damn finnicky. This is a stack of 40 images out of my R6, and it mostly worked out ok, except I managed to miss one focal plane slice on the top bug, meaning it's a tiny bit blurry, and it is killing me to look at.These hawthorn shieldbugs are absolutely *everywhere* on my cotoneaster. Spaceways10/09/2024 - A walk from the house today. Bit too windy for much else. Quiet roads, sleepy feet. The rowan berries are looking wow this year.We spent a good while looking for gorse shieldbugs, perseverance paid off and we found one, happy us. LionelBThis is a change from the usual shieldbugs. It has sharp spikes protruding from either side of the shoulder plate. Although overall brown, there are precise orange patches of different sizes, forming a pattern on the back.
