Alex McLean<p>It's really tricky to spread the word about events these days! I don't support corporate social media and you don't get read attention there anyway, mailing lists aren't what they once were, and this event wants to reach people across many patterny disciplines..</p><p>Any help spreading the word across all the strange pattern-obsessed communities much appreciated!</p><p>--</p><p>Algorithmic Pattern is a new festival and conference for people curious about the practice and culture of algorithmic pattern-making, across algorithmic music, arts and craft. The first edition will take place both in Sheffield UK and online, during September 2025.<br>The call for talks/papers is now open, deadline 2nd June - please see our website for details: <a href="https://2025.algorithmicpattern.org/call/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">2025.algorithmicpattern.org/ca</span><span class="invisible">ll/</span></a><br><a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/textiles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>textiles</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/weaving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weaving</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/algorave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>algorave</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/livecoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>livecoding</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/algorithmicart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>algorithmicart</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/cfp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cfp</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/conference" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>conference</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/patterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>patterns</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/pattern" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pattern</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/craft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>craft</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/juggling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>juggling</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/siteswap" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>siteswap</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/origami" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>origami</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/geometry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>geometry</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/ethnomathmatics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ethnomathmatics</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/choreography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>choreography</span></a></p>
Simon Tatham<p>One way to make a valid <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/siteswap" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>siteswap</span></a> description of a <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/juggling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>juggling</span></a> trick is to take any permutation of 1,…,n, and element-wise subtract the identity permutation from it, mod n.</p><p>E.g. (2,4,3,5,1) − (1,2,3,4,5) = (1,2,0,1,−4) ≡ (1,2,0,1,1) ≡ (1,2,5,1,6)</p><p>Siteswaps can be cyclically permuted, giving a fun consequence:</p><p>Take any n×n Latin square, and subtract the canonical cyclic Latin square, mod n. This always gives a "juggler's word square": a matrix in which each row and column is a valid siteswap!</p>
