The non-political point of why I copied this from a Politico newsletter is apparent in the last paragraph, so skip to that if you must.</p><blockquote><p>Looking out at the crowd assembled around a rectangular-shaped series of tables, Biden recounted how he brought his children to the Dachau concentration camp in Germany after each turned 14. He then made a fist with his right hand, lifted it ever so slightly and pounded the lectern in front of him. </p><p>“I wanted them to see,” he yelled.</p><p>Who knows. It may have been for effect. Biden has told the story before. But at that moment, he didn’t seem to be playing the role of statesman or president, so much as a moral arbiter. He seemed genuinely furious. The crowd before him froze.</p><p>“I lost it emotionally and started tearing up,” said AMY SPITALNICK, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, who was there. “I’m the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. The pain in that room was palpable.”</p><p>I’ve thought a lot about those five words since then — “I wanted them to see” — and the simple power of that basic idea. To see. To understand. To believe. </p></blockquote><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/write" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>write</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingCommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingCommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/nonfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nonfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/journalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>journalism</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/publicspeaking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>publicspeaking</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/speech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>speech</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/speechwriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>speechwriting</span></a></p>
