Last night we were treated to the Waxing Crescent Moon cozying up to the Pleiades star cluster just after sunset.
A low cloud was kind enough to pass in front of the moon when I took this photo, dimming its glow and revealing the line of craters while the unobscured stars were still shining brightly.

Night Sky Almanac 2025 by Radmila Topalovic & Storm Dunlop & Wil Tirion
A beautiful gift for anyone interested in the night sky. Follow the progress of constellations throughout the seasons with this beautiful companion to the night sky from Astronomy experts Collins.
The ultimate trip in America isn't a city, nor a beach, nor even a mountain; no, it's the clear shimmering window into eternity that is Badwater Basin at night, set in the sublime landscape of Death Valley, the "True Sky".
Whorled
M31 (Messier 31 and NGC 224) also commonly known as the Andromeda Galaxy, the nearest major galaxy to our Milky Way. Two satellite galaxies are also in the frame, M32 (Messier 32 and NGC 221) is on the left and M110 (Messier 110 and NGC 205) is on the right.

It was a bit cloudy earlier, but just stepped outside and seen Jupiter and Mars, bright as buttons. Orion and the Southern Cross are clearly visible and the Milky Way is sitting above our house .
Close to Orion was Sirius, which was brighter than Jupiter tonight, and I learned that a bright, blue coloured star near Sirius is called Mirzam.
I've gone recently from never having seen a satellite in the night sky to now seeing SEVEN within minutes, seconds, or less, of the other. Here are some poorly stabilised photographs of the brightest one, with a sneaky second I only noticed when reviewing the photo! Multiple orbital patterns too. I guess I've never gone out and looked up until much longer after sunset until recently.

Venus is extremely bright in the night sky, and all I keep thinking of is “hail Eärendil, brightest of stars!”

#Stargazing fans, now is the time to go out and look for planets - Saturn will be lost in the glare of the Sun soon. I was out with Frankie the other night and conditions were very clear (for city skies, anyway). Venus is incredibly bright - probably responsible for some UFO reports these days - as is Jupiter. Mars is easy, too. Uranus should be visible in binoculars, just down to the right from the Pleiades.
Teachers, don't wait until spring, they'll all be on the wrong side of the Sun to show your students!
(Pic is a simulation of the night sky over #Ottawa for February 14 - I advanced the time to get rid of the Moon)
