There's something unique in the lobby of this apartment tower: It had the ruins of one of the oldest European structures in Australia.
While digging the foundations for the building, which is on the corner of Marsden & Macquarie Streets in the middle of Parramatta, the developers stumbled across an old convict hut, potentially dating back to 1789.
After a lot of back-and-forth over planning and heritage, the building was redesigned so the public could access the site.
In another strange twist, the exhibit was renamed the Philip Ruddock Heritage Centre. You really can't make this up!
(For people reading this overseas: Ruddock was Australia's extremely right wing immigration minister in the 1990s. Many of Trump's immigration policies, such as the mandatory detention of non-citizens and deportation of undocumented non-citizens to third countries, were policies he implemented in Australia in the '90s.)
I'm not sure if the name is supposed to be ironic?
The ruin is free to look at and accessible from the street. Worth a trip if you're in the neighbourhood.
