Reconnaissance geologic mapping has bounded the mainly submerged eighth continent "Zealandia." This is pretty geeky geology stuff. The linked article explains in layman's terms but includes a link to the technical paper. The field methods and the analytical methods used to classify age date are really interesting. Geeky basic geology lab stuff like looking at thin sections, heavy mineral separation, etc. #geology #tectonics #earth #science #Zealandia #NewZealand

An interesting attempt to work out if mineral phase changes at higher temperatures and pressures generate a unique enough seismic signature to make any subducted continental crust* hanging around in the mantle detectable. The answer: at some depths, possibly!

Quite intrigued by hints that there may be a lot hanging around in the mantle transition zone...

*yes, it can happen, if it's dragged under by a subducting oceanic slab.

this is such crazy timing. for the past week i've been writing an rpg module set in an earthquake/tsunami-ravaged western seaboard, off the coast of british columbia in the salish sea. i completely made up this scenario because it seemed like something believable and interesting.

a new study has determined the extent and depth of the cascadia subduction zone using low frequency tomography, and has now determined this will be the location of a megaquake
