87% of #microplastics are caused by tire erosion!!! This one blew my mind. In other words cutting down as much driving as possible and replacing it with mass transit and metal or mag-lev track when possible is the most essential thing we can do to fight this problem. That said as he points out the study that #EVs and regular cars with 500lbs more are not even remotely the same thing. #EV #tires are designed to take more load, just as bus tires are. In fact there is a expanding technology in the EV tire market I will have to look into in a few years where the tire style can drastically increase energy efficiency and noise.
The fight against climate change and microplastics go hand in hand. Even worse recently we learned that our bodies have over 10 times more plastic in it than we previously thought thanks to 3d analysis and many of those microplastics were actually nano-plastics with the ability to get even deeper into our bodies and cells than we previously thought.

Quite enjoy this channels round-ups of tyres (tires in the States). I've used the results of these videos, and associated written blog, to buy tyres.
Frustratingly there's no Goodyear Vector Gen3 in the list which was a very good tyre when I used it across all seasons. Currently using Continental AllSeason2 and I'm. waiting to see how it copes with the cold weather.

"Low-slung station wagons are all but extinct on American roads, and even sedans have become an endangered species. (Ford, producer of the iconic Model T a century ago, no longer sells any sedans in its home market.) Bulky SUVs and pickup trucks — which have themselves steadily added pounds and inches — now comprise more than four out of every five new cars sold in the US, up from just over half in 2013, even as national household size steadily declines.
"The expanding size of automobiles — a phenomenon I call #CarBloat — has deepened a slew of national problems. Take #RoadSafety: Unlike peer nations, the US has endured a steep rise in #TrafficDeaths, with fatalities among #pedestrians and #cyclists, who are at elevated risk in a crash with a huge car, recently hitting 40-year highs. Vehicle occupants face danger as well. A 2019 study concluded that compared to a smaller vehicle, an SUV or a pickup colliding with a smaller car was 28 percent and 159 percent, respectively, more likely to kill that car’s driver.
"Car bloat also threatens the planet. Because heavier vehicles require more energy to move, they tend to gulp rather than sip the gasoline or electricity that powers them, increasing #GreenhouseGas emissions. Extra weight also accelerates the erosion of #roadways and #tires, straining highway maintenance budgets and releasing #microplastics that damage #ecosystems."

Have you ever had a retread come loose on a tire? ... I mean back in the day. It sounds a lot like the cards we used to pin to our bicycles so the spokes would hit them and make a noise. Not as cool though. Occasionally my mind drifts back to my first cars. They were cash cars that generally cost about $100 at the time. Oh, the things that I did to keep them going. I wasn't above buying a single used retread tire. You know, only rich people had four tires that matched 
. All those cars are classics now. I used to be good at replacing clutches as well and would go to a junk yard to find a used one ... let's call it a skill of necessity.

i dont think rubber particles are all that dangerous to anyone. And rubber from dandelions would be fantastic for supply and agriculture.
The egregious component of black #rubber #tires is #carbonblack. Originally, tires made in the early 1900’s were white latex. Let’s just get those tires back in vogue, and everything will be brighter! #ElectricVehicles

Do you remember "white-wall" tires? I wonder did anybody really think that was a good look. Can you still buy white wall tires? I don't recall if I ever had white-wall tires on any of my cars back in the day. With my cars though, if I did it was probably just one of the four tires and probably a retread. What I thought looked good, on a souped-up, car was just black tires, chrome rims and baby moon hubcaps. I couldn't afford those though, but almost always had hub caps - usually three. Evidently, some cars still come with hubcaps; I got curious and checked. Sooo ... we can still look forward to seeing that stray hubcap laying by itself along the road.
