Today's historic photo of the day: 38 years ago today, a converted Harris #train sits at the terminus at St Kilda, Vic, July 26 1987.

When this photo was taken, the St Kilda line had been operating for 130 years, however, it was just five days from closure. After the last train ran on July 31, most of the line was converted to a standard gauge light railway.

Note the track machine stabled in a siding in readiness for the gauge conversion and tracklaying work associated with that conversion.

We spent a lot of our time reading and relaxing in our room. When the Activity Director made an announcement of interesting things coming on the left side of the train, we would open our door to see the window in the hallway.

(I meanwhile wanted to call left "port" and right "starboard" but the announcements never did)

On our way home now. Was a fun and productive (for my sweat glands) day. Toddler had fun and so did I.

A proud staff member gave us a quick tour of a parked battery train. Looks pretty ok inside. Extremely thin/hard chairs though but most people will not be on them long. Drivers cabin is very comfy.
We also got a sticker (well, more than one..).

If an AI picture upsets a lot of people, a video probably upsets even more. But I found it delightful — now I’m just waiting to have an idea that lasts more than a few seconds. Still, trains and cyberpunk ambience never go wrong.
