_The Evening Post_, 20 April 1925:
         THE NORTHLAND
                 TUNNEL
“PERSISTENT RUMOURS OF
             INSTABILITY”
                      ——
 MR. R. SEMPLE ASKED TO
               INSPECT.
                      ——
The following resolution was passed at a meeting held under the auspices of the Labour Party at the Empress Theatre last evening:—
In view of the persistent rumours in circulation concerning the alleged instability of the construction work in the new Northland tunnel, and the uneasiness felt by persons who have visited the tunnel concerning possible future risk to human life, this public meeting of Wellington citizens request Mr. Robert Semple, who is an expert tunneller, to report as soon as possible on the condition of the tunnel, particularly in regard to the matter of #safety.
The resolution was this morning refer[r]ed to the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright), who said that he had no comment to make upon it.

Passages: Reflections on 2024
All years are passages between what was and what is yet to come. Usually, the transitions are subtle and incremental, hardly noticeable. But certain events signal a major crossing into something new. 2024 was one of those times, a bridge between distinct phases of my life. This essay reflects on the year with selected photos that I made in 2024 (and one from an earlier year).

Folklore is full of tales of secret tunnels. It's claimed one runs from the George and Pilgrims Inn to Glastonbury Abbey. The tunnel, said to have been built in the late 1400s on the orders of Abbot Selwood, was apparently explored in the early 20th century by a Mrs Bilbrough. She edged down "a flight of fearfully steep steps, dark and damp and slippery' before finding the passage 'was only three feet in height, so that those who used it must have crawled on their hands and knees, resting at intervals where ledges are cut in the sides for that purpose." Another tunnel - reputed to run from the crypt of Glastonbury's Lady Chapel under the River Brue to the town of Street - is said to have been successfully navigated by a dog. #folklore #weird #gothic #psychogeography #tunnels #Glastonbury #pub #pubs #history

I don't see any #Palestinians negotiating for peace.

I do see #Hamas negotiating for the release of Palestinians from prison in #Israel where they are paid, fed and given a lawyer.
Hamas betting on the media to save them from #Israeli bombs while they hide in #tunnels is an obvious failure for the civilians in #Palestine.
Israel should promote a new Government from Palestinians willing to work with Israelis and install that government as interim.
Hamas failed.

Beddington Caves, South London, have several legends attached. Some say they were smugglers' tunnels, with one story claiming they ran all the way to Brighton. Slightly less outlandish legends state they extend for two miles and have been used as escape tunnels for Romans, robbers' hideaways and secret passages for Catholic priests. It's also claimed they link up with Nonsuch Park and Bishop Whitgift's Palace in Croydon, and that they are walked by the ghost of Walter Raleigh. The tunnels, in reality, are unlikely to run for more than a hundred metres and were probably created for the purpose of extracting sand. #folklore #London #Croydon #weird #gothic #tunnels #caves

_The Evening Post_, 19 October 1923:
           NORTHLAND TUNNEL
        TO BE CONSIDERABLY
                   WIDENED
                      ——
      LOOKING AHEAD FIFTEEN
                     YEARS.
                       ——
Some little time ago the Mayor, Mr. R. A. Wright, expressed the opinion that it would be prudent, in view of the steady growth of #Northland, and… the probability in some future year of tramway connection between Karori road and Wadestown, to construct the Northland tunnel a width somewhat greater than was perhaps called for at the moment.… the Finance Committee… recommended… last evening… approximately the width of the Seatoun tunnel (27ft 6in [8.4m]) at an additional cost of about £4000 [ca. $500,000 today], which… was duly endorsed by the council.
The Mayor… [noted] the example of one mistake… of a tunnel of insufficient width for future traffic…. The Hataitai tunnel could… have been made wide enough for the traffic of many years, and possibly… rendered unnecessary the very heavy expenditure… in the driving of another tunnel.

The Mayor: “Well, this time I am looking ahead for ten or fifteen years. We must look to the future.”

This might sound like a strange question, but does anyone know anything about digging tunnels in dirt?

Like, are there certain soils that you just can't do it in, or just different methods?

I don't mean big massive tunnels with heavy equipment, I mean by hand with a shovel/pic.
