Rage of the #Oligarchs - #NaomiKlein: ‘What They Want Is Absolutely Everything’

The all-star academic and Shock Doctrine author breaks down the dark logic of Trump and Musk’s path of destruction — and what the world’s richest people really want

May 4, 2025

Excerpt: [Klein] "But now, #capitalism has entered a radical and #apocalyptic phase. There is no #utopian vision in any of this. Instead, there’s a final battle. And this is where it gets really dark. The people who are advancing this agenda are also building their #LuxuryBunkers and their #spaceships to #Mars. They don’t believe that there is a future. These people believe history is ending, literally. It’s end times! Get onto your rocket ship, or get into your golden city in the sky. And that is distinct."

Speaking of utopian fiction…

Have you read “The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents” by Terry Pratchett?

Or “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” by Robert C. O’Brien?

I absolutely love the story and the characters, of both books. 😍❣️🐀🐁✨💕

My political progression (a true story)

My first awareness of politics was a rally for Jimmy Carter in 1976 that my grandmother brought me to. I was too young to vote, but I liked Carter. He seemed genuine and down to earth.

When I was old enough to vote, I considered myself a #Utopian #Socialist, and had faith in humanity for a brief period.

After reality and cynicism kicked in, I voted #Green, #Socialist, #Independent -- anyone but the #Duopoly. I did that most of my life.

Then, #BernieSanders came onto the scene. A #DemocraticSocialist who shared my values and who had a chance to win -- before he was sabotaged by the DNC (and who could have won against Trump -- sorry, but it's true. In a debate, Bernie would have kicked T's ass. And Bernie did have populist appeal, just like the orange one).

Despite all that, I did vote for Biden in 2020 -- because I saw what #Fascism looked like under the orange one and his corrupt SCOTUS appointment. And yeah, I'll more than likely "hold my nose and vote for Joe" or Kamala -- because I hate fascists more than I hate inept and corrupt Dems. I won't tell others how to vote. But I thought I'd share how I've voted (and will vote).

Hi fellow book nerds! I'm trying to put together a Utopian Book Club (focused on novels and novellas). I want to include LeGuin's The Dispossessed and @pluralistic 's Walkaway, but from there I've got an endless list of mostly white dudes.

What cool utopian fiction by BIPOC writers have I missed out on?

#Scifi especially #Utopian ones often depict people with & without #disabilities, as a Diabetic I got over time more sensitive to the solutions. #Disabled people are often shown as "healed." I'm not sure this is a good depiction. It only depicts one solution, the disabled person is sometimes forcefully reconfigured, by tech or something else.
What about a future depiction where we create #tech especially for them. Would this swap back into our reality?
