As academic freedom is under unprecedented attack from the Trump adminstration, #WashingtonPost runs an op-ed from Mitch Daniels asking colleges, "How About Doing Some Atoning?"

He bemoans "decades of undeniable, illiberal discrimination and ostracism of even mainstream viewpoints.... Enforced conformity, indoctrination and censorship have been real issues for a long time."

Some ideas don't hold up under scholarly debate. Academia needn't "atone" for that.

Corporate Media Minimize Massive Hands Off! Protests

"many major #media outlets seemed intent on downplaying the size and significance of the massive demonstration of opposition.

...organizers estimate the total reached into the millions...

Despite the scale and significance of the protests, neither the #NewYorkTimes nor the #WashingtonPost had stories about them on their front pages the next day."

click.actionnetwork.orgMedia companies must stand up for free speechRight now, major media giants are rolling over for Trump and his billionaire allies – choosing profit over speaking truth to power: - CBS is preparing to settle Trump’s baseless $20 billion lawsuit against them – reportedly to help win his administration’s approval for a corporate merger. - ABC recently handed Trump $16 million in a lawsuit settlement rather than standing firm against his bullying. - And now, The Washington Post is showing a disturbing willingness to protect billionaire elites instead of defending press freedom. I just signed a Common Cause petition urging these media companies to stand up for free speech and hold the powerful accountable, not bow to them. I hope that you will take action, too.

As Parker Molloy notes, massive demonstrations against the Trump regime took place Saturday. But if you picked up a major print newspaper the next day, you'd barely know they happened.

New York Times: Turn to page 18.

The Present Age · Print Media to Mass Protests: "Please Turn to Page 18"By Parker Molloy

Margaret Sullivan says she asked friends and relatives in various locations what kind of reporing their local media did about the massive worldwide protests Saturday against Trump:

"Quick answer: Not close to what it deserved."

Then she did her own research, and found:

"In the Wall Street Journal, the story’s placement was the 20th most important."

The one downside to browsing archives is the fact that you come across things are somehow still relevant, despite their age. I don't know if the phrase "yellow journalism" can fully capture just how severely outlets like the #BrokenTimes and #washingtonpost have failed at - and in some cases outright betrayed - their solemn duties as journalists.

In the modern day, our failed press goes far beyond simple sensationalism and partisanship.
