What is it with sites that flash a screen to test if a human is at the other end and asking to press a button and hold it for three seconds? WTF? No way I’m doing that. It’s too much like : click on this link and you’ll win a fucking prize type of scam.

Why should any site need to know who or what is at the other end of the connection? There are many ways to prevent whatever it is that they are presumably ‘protecting’ with these shenanigans. I also rue the fact that any remotely ‘financial’ sites use the google ‘pick all bicycles’ game to do the same. There are many other ways to ensure the ‘client’ is ‘human’ (multi-factor authentication, dongle, biometrics, etc.)

Enshitification? Lazy programming? Bad design? Done on the cheap? Or just plain scamming and/or harvesting? All of these are symptomatic of #enshitification in my view.

I like this use of side notes/footnotes at https://www.citationneeded.news/free-and-open-access-in-the-age-of-generative-ai/ . Footnotes use letters to distinguish them from numbered references, and are duplicated as side notes on large screens. I also like the “Show buttons that expand the side note” or “Include side notes after the paragraph on small screens” approaches on other sites. #webdesign #sidenotes

🚧👨‍💻 Oh no, the unstoppable force known as the German language has struck again! Apparently, when your app's metaphor is a speed bump, German gives you *eighteen* different ways to crash and burn your website 🤯😅. Sure, blame the entire linguistic history of Germany for your inability to handle long words, that's sound engineering! 🛠️🔨

SpeedBump · The German language broke my websiteDid you know that Germans have 18 variations for "speed bump"?

A coup it is.

"So, yes. This is a wholesale attack on the American safety net, led by billionaires and far-right politicians who are frighteningly comfortable with fascism and autocracy. The last month has been called a coup by politicians, researchers, and watchdogs alike. I don’t want to diminish the harm these people will do — the harm they are doing."

During one of my earliest professional projects, I encountered a progress bar that was, as the engineering team put it, “complete nonsense.” (That’s the G-rated version, anyway. 😆)

Here’s the story of how it worked, why it worked that way, and the more honest alternatives I’ve recommended since then: cloudfour.com/thinks/truth-lie

just under TWO WEEKS until the submission deadline for Good Internet magazine!

☂️ Good Internet launches in May 2025. it's a volunteer-run, not-for-profit print and digital quarterly magazine for personal website owners and those interested in using the internet as a means of self-expression, art, and recreation.

🔎 we're looking for 1,500 to 4,000 word articles about anything for that audience!

👉 this means #webdev hobbyists, digital (and traditional) #artists, #internet culture enthusiasts, #technology nerds, #socialmedia expatriates, & anyone who wants to unplug from the corporate-owned #web.

topics could be:

* internet history
* personal websites & blogs
* #accessibility on the #indieweb
* finding inspiration for a #blog
* #webdesign trends (current or old)
* running from the #enshittification of the web
* lessons or post-mortems from web projects
* news or overviews of #opensource projects
* #privacy on the indieweb

🔍 also looking for any #art submissions centered around the web, coding, internet culture, and digital art!

if it relates to hobbies on "this side of the web," we probably want to run it!

✨ you can have your article submitted as text and images only OR you can code a whole webpage that helps tell your story!

🌊 if you're interested in learning more, sign up for our email list or check out the submission guidelines @ goodinternetmagazine.com!

🙏 (please boost if you can! <3 getting the word out helps so much!)
