Just got an email from a women-in-cyber org, advertising jobs at Meta.

Zuckerberg's, " more masculine energy in tech" Meta.

You've got to be kidding.

It's becoming very clear that too many US cyber organisations are never going to pick a side. Or not the side of the people, in any case.

This #WITDay, we're celebrating Martine Postma. She's the activist and former journalist who started the Repair Café movement.

“I wanted to do more than just write about it,” Postma says. “More and more people don’t feel good about our throw-away society and are ready for change. [They] don’t throw away because they want to, but because they don’t know what else to do.”

Sometimes being an open-source maintainer is nice. I haven't done paid consulting for the GNUstep Objective-C Runtime for ages (I wasn't doing enough for it to be worth the tax effort and I'm not always able to commit to doing things in a sufficiently timely fashion to set up the expectations that being paid creates), so I added a note a while ago telling people to donate to Murray Edwards if they find the project useful.

Last week, I got the following email from the nice folks at Algoriddim saying (abridged):

I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that we appreciate your continued work on the GNUstep runtime, and that we’ve made another donation to Murray Edwards to support women in computer science.

Always nice to see things being paid forwards.

💻 Hello Old Friend, Talos II 💻

This was my first IBM POWER9 system, acquired in 2020 and built for home/desk use. Dual socket SMT4 Sforza, 144 threads, 256-512GB RAM, various storage/net/accelerators over the years. [1]

As expected, I fell in love and acquired four IBM Power System L922-2U [2], which are presently in the colo awaiting network rebuild (remote hands this time).

The Talos II has served a variety of purposes, with most of its time running FreeBSD PPC64le (&a bit of PPC64be for fun). Sometimes also Linux, back when I was tearing into qemu code for compiler optimization hypothesis testing, RTX GPU passthrough, +validating assumptions about qemu on P9/le handling amd64 & arm64 emulation.

So, out of storage! Into the rack! New user accounts! But first it needs updated OS drives (the 3x 64GB SATADOM in Raid-Z1 need to be repurposed), and a NIC (25G-DP CX-5 or X710-DA4).

it's funny because it's not just a cartoon making a point, but very literally the majority of every interview I've had in tech sectors. There have been some stand-outs, very few and very far between.

nearly as often I've had their type tell me that my experience surely couldn't be this way, simply because they've never considered life from another's shoes. well, surely they must be right, right?

after some time one gets used to the layers of self-censorship, of maintaining a type of professionalism and expressive-pefection and poise so consistently that it becomes not second nature but a long-forgotten absorbed rule of existing once inside the corporate doors.

since the diagnosis I've let down a lot of those walls, those perfections, just to see how life would be. it did not make life easier, that can be said politely.
