“It’s all just a little bit of history repeating” - Shirley Bassey

“Operation Wetback” 1954: a federal program to hunt down & deport “undocumented immigrants” from Mexico. Somewhere between 1.1 and 1.5 million were rounded up & deported…. yet, many were documented migrants or US citizens.

Sharing this (justly) furious verse from Ewan Robertson's song of c. 1880s about the Highland Clearances, telling Patrick Sellar to burn in hell.

Sellar, a factor (property manager) for the aristocratic Sutherland family, oversaw the forced eviction of tenants to make way for sheep, which could make landowners more money.

From Scottish Studies 1964: 104-6, Gaelic as sung by Andrew Stewart; English John MacInnes; Scots Hamish Henderson.

In the blunted night of the coal shed,
without a torch, my fingers dig
among the coal for the coal.
Hear it scutter into the bucket…

To celebrate the release of "Black Coal and Red Bandanas," an illustrated history from PM Press, we're exciting to host a virtual evening with author Raymond Tyler and illustrator Summer McClinton. They'll be joined by Shaun Slifer and Kenzie New-Walker of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum!

Register for this free online event and find a copy of "Black Coal and Red Bandanas" at firestorm.coop/events/3342-the. Can't make the event but still want to listen in? Sign up and we'll send you the recording to stream at your convenience!
