Stefano Marinelli<p>My friends, I'm so excited and happy to introduce a new project: the illumos Cafe!</p><p>The positive and constructive spirit of the BSD Cafe, created and maintained by all the friends who participated from day one in building a strong and friendly community, deserves to spread to other operating systems. Because there are other OSes that deserve attention, certainly more than they're getting right now.</p><p>Operating systems based on illumos (like SmartOS, OmniOS, Tribblix, OpenIndiana, etc.) are mature, stable, secure, and perfectly usable for a wide range of tasks. ZFS is native, zones are an excellent method for containerization, and bhyve and kvm coexist beautifully - and so much more, too much to list in a single post.</p><p>So from today, the illumos Cafe will stand alongside the BSD Cafe in creating a positive, respectful, and growth-oriented (but also relaxing!) environment, starting right here in the Fediverse with a Mastodon instance and a snac one.</p><p>I've written an introductory article about the project, including some technical details. I invite everyone interested to read it: <a href="https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18</span><span class="invisible">/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/</span></a></p><p>Choose your table, take a seat and enjoy your time at the illumos Cafe!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SysAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/illumosCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumosCafe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Community</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OSS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/illumos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SmartOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartOS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenIndiana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenIndiana</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ZFS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ZFS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/bhyve" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bhyve</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/kvm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kvm</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/snac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>snac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ITNotes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ITNotes</span></a></p>

Stephen<p>My current theory is that the issue lies somewhere in the confluence of three things...</p><p>* libtorrent uses memory maps files<br>* I'm in the habit of using zram swap, for in-memory compressed swap, with the defaults, so up to 32Gb (pre-compression) can be stored here<br>* I recently switched from btrfs to ZFS, with the default 50% host memory ARC cache</p><p>I didn't see this behaviour before the switch to ZFS, so perhaps I need to tune some things here?</p><p>(2/2)</p><p><a href="https://nerdout.club/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://nerdout.club/tags/zfs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>zfs</span></a></p>
Gary Parker :party_porg:<p>I flashed an LSI firmware on it, popped it in the spare 8x PCIe slot, and moved the external disk shelf over to it.</p><p>So I've now effectively got 16 disks on one 8x slot, and 25 on the other.</p><p>I could start balancing my ZFS pools and VDEVs across the two HBAs, but that's enough for one day.</p><p>Absolutely no software reconfiguration was required. <a href="https://cyberplace.social/tags/TrueNAS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TrueNAS</span></a> and <a href="https://cyberplace.social/tags/ZFS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ZFS</span></a> are amazing, it's all done with SAS addresses. But you can't snapshot EFI, because that's on a separate FAT32 partition.</p><p>So what happens if you run an update (<code>pacman -Syu</code> in this case) that includes a kernel update, and something goes wrong? The version of the kernel in the EFI partition will be newer than the modules in the snapshotted <code>/usr/lib/modules</code>. That's surely going to cause an issue, right?</p><p>From memory (it's been over 15 years), Gentoo can have multiple versions of the same kernel installed at once. But Arch only allows one version of any package at one time.</p>
