Canadian academics are being urged to avoid all nonessential travel to the U.S. amid the Trump administration's crackdown on research and education along with heightened fears of being turned away at the border. On Tuesday, the Canadian Association of University Teachers issued a travel advisory to its members that “strongly recommends” Canadian academic staff travel to the United States only if necessary. #academics #education #professors #travel #canada #us #trump globalnews.ca/news/11132827/us

"Under threat is one of the largest streams of federal money that the K-12 system receives: Title I funds, which flow to high-poverty schools. That money totaled nearly $43 million in Vermont this year, Lindsey Hedges, a spokesperson for the Agency of Education, has said previously."

“Part of Trump’s fight with the Supreme Court is an attempt to demonstrate dominance…, but institutions, as well as the courts, are standing up to him. With Trump having won concessions from Columbia University…, other universities are banding together to defend education, academic freedom, and freedom of speech. On Monday, Harvard University took a stand against the administration’s demand…”

like Mao Zedong in China more than 50 years ago, has embarked on a “cultural revolution” that seeks “to overthrow the bureaucratic and cultural elites” that are anchored in the nation’s great universities. Liberal professors aren’t yet forced to wear dunce caps or work in “reeducation camps” in farms and factories. Maybe that’s next. For the moment, a salute to “Fair Harvard,” and how it’s living the motto, veritas.“…

I’m not part of academia, but I am who I am because of it. Coming from one of the most unequal countries in the world, I was fortunate to study at one of its top universities. I don’t need to list all the doors that opened for me as a result.

I still have friends and contacts in the academic world, and it pains me to see it under threat in a country that has produced so much knowledge and provided opportunities to so many talented people from all walks of life.

I’ve met countless brilliant minds who were able to do their work thanks to academic freedom in the US and the excellence of its research and educational institutions. At this point, we don’t need to focus on the flaws - they are about to become the least of our problems.

Everyone who understands the importance of academic freedom and its role in a democratic society should be deeply concerned.

Harvard's response to the #Trump administration: "Harvard remains open to dialogue about what the university has done, and is planning to do, to improve the experience of every member of its community. But Harvard is not prepared to agree to demands that go beyond the lawful authority of this or any administration."

This Is How Universities Can Escape Trump’s Trap, if They Dare
archive.is/2025.04.15-130708/h

"So this is my radical proposal for universities: Act like universities, not like businesses. Spend your endowments. Accept more, not fewer students. Open up your campuses and expand your reach not by buying real estate but by bringing education to communities. Create a base. Become a movement.

Alternatively, you can try to negotiate with a mafia boss who wants to see you grovel. When these negotiations fail, as they inevitably will, it will be too late to ask for the public’s support."
