Taking some time with #CarelessPeople and it's great and horrifying but also needs a CW for extreme medical trauma with lots of blood loss and intubation. I don't usually have a problem with this but I'm a little faint after chapter 32!

"Former Facebook executive Sarah Wynn-Williams testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, accusing the social media company of undermining national security and briefing China on U.S. artificial intelligence efforts in order to grow its business there."

And suddenly it's my turn with my public library's copy of #CarelessPeople and the sheer volume of the sound of all the red flags flapping is deafening!
""You dismantled the furnishing of a proper office to make it look like this? Like it is under construction?" One of the officials inquired, incredulous."
Fucking Facebook. Should have been strangled in the cradle.

'Sarah Wynn-Williams, the former Facebook policy director behind a best-selling memoir about her time at the company, will testify at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing next week.'
I’ve started reading “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams, which is an insider account of earlier years at Facebook. My mind is boggled. Reminds me of why I hate the phrase “lean in”. It’s both a fast read and a painful read. Kind of like watching a crash in slow motion. You hope the bad stuff won’t happen, but you know it has, and that even worse stuff happens. It does start to illustrate how Zuckerberg got to the ring-kissing stage with 47. He gets high on power, and never wants to get off that high. #bookstodon #reading #CarelessPeople #fredagsbog
Recensão interessante do livro "Careless People" de Sarah Wynn-Williams por @nzagalo. Do que tenho lido, esta segue uma tendência um pouco contracorrente.

I finished reading #CarelessPeople While the content of the whole book is pretty horrendous, the last third really goes into detail about the incredible, tangible damage Facebook has done in the world.
I won't highlight any particular anecdotes from it and urge you to read it for yourself, but I will share this one sentence:
"Facebook does work for a beauty product company tracking when thirteen-to-seventeen-year-old girls delete selfies, so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment."
Despicable. Utterly despicable.
And then there's what they did in Myanmar. Or didn't do.
One of many notable takeaways from 'Careless People':
The creators and top execs of Meta do not allow their own children on it.
Think about that.
Huh.
Mainstream media just talking about #CarelessPeople #Meta #Zuckerberg now.
It's been out for how long?
I guess it's good they're at least talking about it, though.
I finished Careless People today. Although some parts were inciting, I am not very surprised. It was pretty interesting to listen to a New Zealander deal with the shortcomings of the US Health Care system, particularly Insurance being tied to occupation. My key takeaway is that there is little value in cozying up to the upper echelons of power in the technology world.

"We need to talk about Sheryl Sandberg" edition.
I'm surprised that the most talked about anecdote about Sandberg is that she pressured her female colleagues to share her bed on a private jet.
Want REAL tea?
Sandberg forced her female subordinates to do free labor to promote her book Lean In.
When the Women's March occurred in January 2017, Sandberg would not hear about it and refused to discuss it.
Am I supposed to add "allegedly"? Ok, allegedly. I believe it.
#CarelessPeople, which my local system (Minuteman) has 8 copies, and now 594 people on the wait list. 72 copies on order.)
Hey, #bookstodon, I'm going to buy a physical book thats in high demand.
If I read it, and then donate it to my local #library, what are the odds that it goes into circulation, rather than, say, held for the next book sale?
Finished Careless People last night. It’s a really compelling read, continually surprising and horrifying. The author is certainly complicit by her involvement and naïveté, but at least she gave us this view from the inside. Definitely recommend.

My “not a book review” of Careless People – the book Facebook doesn’t want you to read.
With highlights on Ireland’s complicity and the lengths people farmers (as I call them) will go to to appease authoritarian regimes like China.
https://ar.al/2025/03/21/careless-people/
It’s clear from this that Ireland should be stripped of the authority to enforce GDPR and, really, people farmers – and the business model of people farming in general – should be banned in the EU.
(Don’t hold your breaths.)

'Careless People has debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. It’s also spent much of the week in the number three position on Amazon’s bestseller list. That’s despite the fact that Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former policy director at Facebook, has been barred from promoting or publicly discussing the book following legal action by Meta.'
