Travellers at Rest, Adriaen van Ostade, 1671
After 1670, Van Ostade mainly painted outdoor scenes, extolling unhurried, simple country life. The men drink beer and smoke their pipes. In the 17th century, Dutch people smoked so much that, according to foreign travellers, the smell of the Low Countries was the smell of tobacco. The most and best tobacco was cultivated in North and South America by people in slavery and shipped to the Netherlands for resale to other countries.

A Couple, Maarten van Heemskerck, 1529
The woman is depicted as an industrious, virtuous housewife. The basket on the wall holds the yarn she has already spun. It has recently been suggested that the sitters are the Amsterdam draper Hubert Pietersz and his wife Trijn Jacobsdr, partly because the ledger on his table reads: ‘Betaelt Hubrecht [= Hubert] boucs.’ It is not clear why she occupies the side usually reserved for men. This important position was traditionally associated with purity and power.

A Ship on the High Seas Caught by a Squall, Known as ‘The Gust’, Willem van de Velde (II), c. 1680
This large, 70-gun British warship is in distress. A fierce gust of wind has broken one of its masts, and a sail has come loose. In 1672, Willem van de Velde II, together with his father, who was also a marine painter, entered the service of the English court. He made this painting and its companion, The Cannon Shot, in England.

Vase, anonymous, c. 1100 - c. 1199
In the early 12th century, Korean potters succeeded in crafting a distinct kind of stoneware, setting it apart from Chinese products. This stoneware featured translucent glazes, organic shapes, and refined decorations and was used at court as tableware and in rituals. The motifs in this vase were carved into the unfired stoneware, and later filled in with white and brown slip.

Still Life with a Silver Jug and a Porcelain Bowl, Willem Kalf, 1655 - 1660
Willem Kalf did not paint the most common type of Asian objects circulating in the Dutch Republic, but generally chose rare examples that were already decades old. Sometimes he combined elements from various objects. For example, the decoration on the inside of this bowl is typical of klapmutsen (bowls with a flat rim) from earlier in the century, while the decoration on the outside is based on a contemporary
piece of porcelain.

Calvary, Pseudo Jan Wellens de Cock, c. 1520
Through paintings such as this, believers could follow the episodes of Christ’s Passion and identify with his pain and suffering. In the background, he collapses under the weight of the cross. Next he is stripped (lower right) and mocked (left); then soldiers cast lots for his clothes (bottom left). In an opening at upper centre, Jesus hangs on the cross.
