_The Evening Post_, 28 October 1924:
LOCAL AND GENERAL
…
It is proverbial that troubles never come singly, and this was exemplified on Friday morning, when Commander #Middleton, a retired naval officer, residing in Clarke road, #Onehunga, discovered one of his #cows dead (states the “New Zealand Herald”), the loss being accentuated by the fact that it was a beautiful little Jersey, a 300lb [ca. 140 kg] tested butter-fat cow. The owner promptly paid a visit by motor to the stock inspector, in order to obtain his opinion whether it had died from eating the black clover which is now growing so profusely. Returning home, he found his garage and washhouse a mass of flames, and in a few minutes it was only a smouldering heap. However, in accordance with the custom in the Navy, the owner took his loss quite philosophically, consoling himself with the reflection that if the fire had occurred an hour earlier he would have lost his motor-car also.

The play only ran for 9 days in August 1624 - the political stuff, despite being disguised with the (arguably racist) chess allegory, was too volatile, and the censors intervened. There’s also extreme and sexual violence, but that’s normal for Jacobean drama.
The company is also doing a live performance I can’t be part of, but when the YouTube material is released I’ll post a link. #EarlyModern #EarlyModernDrama #Middleton #ThomasMiddleton https://social.coop/@CommonMugwort/112914852429640728

Here's a shot from deep below #Middleton in #Derbyshire, it's an abandoned #LimestoneMine which can still be made operational if need be.
Where we were is approx. 200ft down, the workings span 25 miles over 3 levels, it's worked on the room and pillar method, with rooms 13 m wide and pillars 17 m square, ceiling height is 8 m.
It is immense, just for scale we have Westy lighting up the tunnel ahead.
