4) Minor agg (possibly Tawny Marbled - these are very tricky to tell apart and only a genital examination would say for sure - but I do not kill moths)

It's forewings (overwing) extend down and back like aeroplane wings but are squared off at the bottom. It's hindwing (underwing) is held out horizontally under the forewing. It gives the impression of being rather square in shape. It has very visible thin yellow-orange veins. and two very thick creamy white antennae

Side on shot of a large hawkmoth on a finger. It faces left. It's large wings extend back and are slightly blurred out of focus. The focus is the thick grey abdomen that curls sharply up at the back. It has thick white legs, almost spider like that grip the finger, and two thick creamy antennae

Its wings are largely of a similar colour with a very distinctive arrow or dagger shape down the centre, the point of the arrow pointing away from the head. A small 0.5cm moth on a finger. It is arrowhead shaped. it is a warm reddish-brown colour, almost brick-red with hints of ginger and dark brown veins. There is a very slightly paler band, like a hem, that the runs across the bottom of the wings. it has two stigmata on each wing, one above the other, one ovoid, one reniform.

Sometimes, you just happen to miss one!

Packing away the moth box and found this little fella on the side of a shallow planter. It is a welcome to 2025 and my first sighting this year of:

TREBLE BROWN SPOT - a geometer (read: flat and butterfly-like).

Common round these parts in May-June

A small 1.5 cm wide flat moth, butterfly shaped. It is a pale cream colour with three distinctive brown spots close to the left and right wing edges. Above the spots, in each wing corner is a brown smudge and these are all separated from the central part of the wing by a wavy brown line. On the other side of that line, in the central cream section of wing, there are four tiny brown diamond dots, two on each wing. Finally, the wing edges are heavily fringed. The moth sits on a black, scratched plastic planter.

Tough night with the rain and breezy conditions. No hot night summer bangers to speak of yet. So just some returning favourites. 1 & 2 are similarly named, 1 & 3 are twig mimics and 4 just because it sums up the weather!

A narrow moth on a finger. It rolls its wings around its abdomen like a rolled leaf or snapped twig. It is a light silvery-straw colour with brown woody streaks and pitting. It resembles a small snapped twig

Overhead shot of 1cm moth on a finger. It is arrowhead shaped. It is dark brown with two silvery-straw flame flashes down the sides of its wings extending from its head to about 3/4 of the way down. It has two stigmata on each wing, both blue-grey edged in silvery white. One is orbital and below it is one that is reniform.

An old favourite. A large 2.5cm moth on a finger. It resembles a large snapped birch twig. It is silvery grey with black and brown lines, like birch bark. It has a flat buff coloured face and at the back of the wing there is a large buff patch that resembles the inside wood of a twig as if it has been snapped from the tree.

A flat 1.5cm moth on a wall. It is butterfly shaped. It is white with a dull but very dark non-uniform band that resemble cloud shapes, which, apart from being broken in a couple of places, runs continuously around the edge of the wings. An almost magpie effect.

Weather not been great for mothing recently. Took a punt last night after the heavy rain and whilst not numerically or diversity significant, I did attract a very handsome EYED HAWK MOTH. He wouldn't readily show me eyes on the underwing, until he was flapping for take-off (hence a bit of blur in photo 2)

A very large 5cm aeroplane shaped moth on a finger. Its wings angle sharply back diagonally from its head and upper abdomen giving it an aeroplane or wide arrowhead appearance. Its wings start narrow and then widen into an angular square towards the end. They are a warm grey with chocolate brown smudges. Its abdomen is very chunky and is more chocolate brown. The background is blurred foliage.

The same moth described in the previous picture. This time it rests on a finger on an upturned palm. Its wing ends are blurred because it is flapping ready to take-off. The difference with this picture is that it is partially revealing its underwings which partially show a bullseye patter on each underwing. The eyes have a navy blue centre edged in a bright blue , and then edged again in black. Hence its name, eyed hawk moth.

Unfortunately, a local cat breached my anti-cat defences and killed 5 #moths and scared off others. to thoughtless & irresponsible cat owners that let their f***ers outside to rampage wildlife / shit on other people's properties. You wouldn't let your dog do it!

4) Willow Beauty (a bit misnamed, in my view)

A flat 2.5cm moth on a grey egg box. It is butterfly shaped and streaky in appearance. It is grey-brown with a dark brown u-shaped band running from top wing edge to the other side. It has other random dark brown markings and streaks over its wings.

First mothing back after holiday and a bit frustrating photographically. Numerically okay with 14 x Heart & Darts. But a couple of others (including a nice Light Emerald) flew before I could get a good photo. Two for today:

1) Clouded Border (again, not being compliant hence the slight fuzz)

2) The ever-compliant, regally posing, Buff Tip. Showcased before, but he was the only other noteworthy.

A small 1cm wide flat moth that is butterfly shaped. It rests on a grey egg tray. It is white with a dark brown patchy broken border all the way round the wing edges and similar patchy broken U shaped band running across the middle. The bottom wing edge is fuzzy because the camera wasn't quite focused and he was about to fly.

A 2cm moth on a finger facing right. It sits proudly. It is cylindrical, like a snapped twig, silver-grey in colour with a flat buff colour face and its back wing edges pinched together and also buff coloured, with a chiselled piece of wood appearance.

This is part 2 of last night #moths. Part 1 is on the feed and if you missed them, take a look, because there's some beauties on there too.

1) Oak Hook-tip (t. left)

A flat 1.5cm moth on a finger. It is an arch shape so convex across the top wing and flattish across the bottom. The wing corners are slightly hooked. It has a tiny head with two feathery antennae. It is an orange-brown colour with two pale creamy-yellow lines. The top one runs in a U shape from one top wing edge to the other. The one below runs the same but is more jagged in appearance. Between the two lines, on each wing, there are two dark discal spots.

A flat triangular moth against a wall. It has a tiny head with two pin eyes either side. Its wings are made up of four thick, jagged-edged horizontal bands alternating reddish brown and reddish grey. The furry end of it grey abdomen pokes out the bottom. It has thin wiry legs that extend from near its head to grip the wall

Overhead shot of a 1.5cm moth on a finger. It is arrowhead shaped. It has two feathery antennae. Its head and nape are very furry in ash grey, like kitten fur. Its wings are the same ashy grey with some random black dots.

A 5mm moth on a piece of white flex. It is miniscule in reality and this photo is heavily zoomed. It is cylindrical in shape (like a rolled leaf or a duffle coat toggle) and it faces left. It is primarily a bright yellow with black, blue-grey and red-brown marbling effect. It has two antennae which stretch back from its head down each side.

An ostentatious teddy-boy moth. Jet black thorax/head and a cape of black wings with large creamy-white splodges. They are partially open revealing a creamy orange-yellow underwing with random black splodges.

Overhead shot of a 4cm wide flat moth on a wooden table. It resembled a thin planed off bit of wood. A veneer. It It is mid-brown with dark brown scorch marks near the left and right wing edges. Its forewings are spread wide revealing its jagged edged underwings which are more streaky and scorched dark brown.

Basically a black and white aeroplane on a finger. It is twice as wide as it is long. It is about 4cm wide. It is white with extensive black peppering on its wings and abdomen. It has two feathered antennae.

I am a lucky, lucky potato. I took a trip to Stensbæk Hede early this morning. First I found the severed wings of a male Saturnia pavonia -Lille Natpåfugleøje -Emperor Moth. Two minutes later I found a female laying eggs and then another female.

A bit breezy and the continuing full moon kept #moth numbers low again. Best of the bunch were:

1) Treble Lines

2) Pale Prominent

3) Iron Prominent

4) Heart & Dart (the very first moth species I found in my moth box when I first started)

Overhead shot of a 1.5cm arrow-head shaped moth on a finger. It has a pentagon of sandy brown fur on its head. Its wings are like white pepper. Whilst it's called Treble Lines, this one actually has four dark pink thin wavy line traversing its wings horizontally.

A 2cm moth on a finger. It faces right. It is wedge shaped. it resembles a piece of bark or woodchip. It is a light brown with dark brown streaks. It has a snout that sticks out and curls up slightly. Its top wing edge has a tuft with a dark patch on the tip. Its back wing edge curves round in a convex arc and it is flat across the bottom. A little furry tail pokes out the back.

A 2cm thick, chunky moth on a finger. It is a thickset wedge shape and it faces right. It is a deep, dark iron grey with flashes of rust-red and gingery gold. It has two very furry front feet which grip the finger tip. It has a small black tuft halfway down the top wing edge.

A 1.5 cm moth on a wooden table. It is a narrow arrowhead shape. It is sandy mid-brown. It has a pentagonal piece of fur on its shoulders. It has three stigmata on each wing. An all dark brown dart/dagger/shark's tooth shape, under which there is a hollow dark brown thin-edged circle, under which is an all dark brown kidney or upturned heart shape. Hence its name Heart and Dart. It has two quite long wiry antennae coming out of its head.

Close to full moon and clear skies this weekend so not expecting huge #moth numbers, but had my first ever Coxcomb Prominent, which was nice. Only two others visited with it. So here we have

1) Coxcomb Prominent
2) Chocolate Tip
3) Yellow-barred Brindle

...and that was it!

Side on shot of a 2cm wedge-shaped moth on a finger. It faces right. It resembles a bit of bark. It holds its wings tight to its abdomen in a tented position so it is wider at the face end but tapers to a pinched together back wing edge. It is reddish-brown with dark brown streaks and a small dark brown tuft halfway down its back. The top of of its head is flat and beige, like it has been snapped off a tree. Its back wing edge has a reddish brown scalloped line.

Overhead shot of a 1cm moth on a finger. It is a grey-brown colour with three lighter horizontal stripes. The tip of its head and the tip of its abdomen are dark chocolate brown. The two wing corners are tipped in chocolate brown, although the left one is slightly blurred in the photo. It has two short feathered antennae that poke left and right from its head.

A small 1cm equilateral triangle moth flat against a wall. It has a tiny head and two pinhead eyes either side of a snout. Its wings are green-yellow brindled or mottled. It has a very faint blue band running left to right about two-thirds of the way down, but seems more like its emerging from beneath the main yellow-green colour, rather than a striking blue band.

A little cooler last night, so fewer numbers in and around the moth box, but still attracted:

1) Pale Prominent (an excellent woodchip mimic)

2) Lunar Thorn (a fallen leaf mimic)

3) Poplar Grey (spot the owl eyes)

4) And if you missed him earlier... the hilarious Spectacle

A 2.5cm moth on a palm facing left. It resembles a pale piece of wood chipping and is an irregular wedge shape. It is light woody brown with thin dark brown grainy streaks. It has a small tuft halfway down its back which has a dark brown tip. It has a little light brown snout that pokes out the front.

A moth on a finger. It has a thick pale orange abdomen. It holds two heavily scalloped pale orange and almost translucent wings vertically above its abdomen. The wings resemble fallen autumnal leaves. There is a darker thin orange band running across the wing within which there is two tiny crescent shaped stigmata, hence its name Lunar Thorn

Last night I had two similar, but different species, with the most amazing #faces

Top - Spectacle
Bottom - Dark Spectacle (albeit a faded specimen)

Difference is Spectacle has more defined band & stigmata on the forewing whereas Dark Spectacle is more plain charcoal grey with redder cross lines. Both have #spectacle faces

Front on shot of Spectacle moth. He has a furry snout (palps) two white rings that resemble spectacles and wiry antennae which resemble an old-fashioned moustache. He also has a gingery mohican tuft. It reminds me of an old WW2 RAF pilot.

Side on shot of Spectacle moth on a finger. It faces right. It is largely dark grey, with a darker almost black band across the middle which is edged in ginger lines. it has two stigmata within the band, one oval, one kidney shaped. Its mohican point forward from the top of its head.

Front on shot of Dark Spectacle moth. It too has white markings edged in black, above its eyes, that resemble a big pair of spectacles. It has lost its tuft suggesting it is an older moth. It also has a snout that sticks out.

Side on shot of Dark Spectacle. It is plainer and more light charcoal grey albeit this is an older and faded specimen that has lost its tuft. Its central band is less pronounced and the stigmata less obvious. The edges of the central band are chestnut red.

A mild, still night produced a high number of #moths. First set of highlights included

1) Pale Tussock Moth - huge floofy legs

2) Miller - as if doused in milled flour

3) Iron Prominent - dark and moody

4) Poplar Lutestring - neat and tidy little thing

Overhead shot of 3cm chunky triangular moth on wood. It is dusty light grey, almost dusty white. It has two extremely fluffy legs that point out in front of its head and two orange leaf-shaped, feathered antennae pointing left and right.

Overhead shot of 2cm chunky, arrowhead moth on a finger. It has a furry head and two wiry antennae. Its colouring is light dusty grey with black flecks. It is called a Miller as it looks as if it has been showered with flour.

A side on shot of a 3cm chunky moth on a finger. It holds its wings close to its abdomen, not spread out. It is wedge-shaped with a diagonally sloping back wing edge. it is a handsome dark iron grey with flecks of gold and a big fluffy leg pointing out in front.

It is handsomely marked in warm light brown with two dark bands made up of four brown lines (or lutestrings) across is wings, one near the head end and one near the back wing edge. The lutestring lines are not very obvious on this specimen, but they are more visible on an overhead shot.

They are steel grey with black peppery dusting and three black wavy lines running horizontally. It has two leaf-shaped feathered antennae.

Side on shot of a 1.5cm chunky moth on a finger. It is quite short and stumpy with a round furry head and wings held close to its abdomen. The colour is brindled with no distinct pattern, just hints of warm reddish-brown, grey, and black in two halves. Looking side on, the right side, nearest the head is darker with a small bullseye stigmata. The left side, nearer the back wing edge is distinctly lighter, albeit the same brindling.

I'll start with FUZZY FACES. More beauties to come later...

1) and 2) The giant POPLAR HAWK MOTH - as if torn from the pages of a magazine but with the cutest fuzzy face

3) and 4) The BUFF TIP - an impressive birch twig mimic.

They are scalloped across the bottom. The hindwings poke out underneath the forewings but either side of its head. It gives the appearance of being almost square and quite angular - leaf like. The wings are largely grey with a dark grey-brown band across the middle with a small white dot in the very centre of each wing.

Nothing inside the #moth box last night but this lurker was on the sheet underneath.

1) A rather fresh and mint PEBBLE HOOK-TIP (first sighting in 2025). Common across the UK, one of the 'flatties' rather than 'fatties'. Flatties tend to be highly strung and don't pose well on fingers!

Overhead shot of Pebble Hook-tip moth on a paving slab. It is a flat moth, about 2cm wide. It is a narrow oval shape, but horizontal, not vertical. So the wing tips are at the extreme left and right of the picture. The top wing edge runs from wing tip to wing tip in a smooth convex arc. The wing tips at either end curve sharply down and back up underneath to form the appearance of a hook. Imagine the top wing edge from the middle to the wing tips left and right is like the sloping shoulders and arms, slightly outstretched, of someone carrying two imaginary heavy bags of shopping and the hooks are the hands that hold them.

Where the top edge is a smooth arc, the bottom wing edge forms a very shallow wavy W shape from wing tip to wing tip.

It is a sandy or pebble-brown moth with a dark brown horizontal line running right across the middle. Above the line, there is a small pebble eye on each wing. These are black edged with a blue-grey centre. In the wing tip corners there is a small blue arc shaped patch. . It is a very pretty moth.
