This instrument is just one of many parts of the first-of-its-kind #OceanObservatory in the #SouthernOcean, launched in January in partnership with #UVIC, #SpanishNationalResearchCouncil & #OceanNetworksCanada.

The #observatory monitors temperature, water depth, oxygen & chlorophyll levels in the #ocean water. Paired to a #satellite, the observatory transmits #data every 30 mins to #researchers.

#SolarStorm detected in #deepsea observatories
The powerful solar storm driving the #auroraborealis over global skies last weekend was also triggering the movement of compasses deep in the #ocean, as revealed in new scientific findings shared today by #OceanNetworksCanada (#ONC) and University of Victoria. The most significant #magnetic shift moved the direction of the #compass within a range of +30 to -30 degrees and was recorded at a depth of 25 meters!
