Petite vue sur le volcan Llaima, avec des Araucarias, de grands épineux pouvant vivre jusqu'à 2000 ans, dans le Parc National Conguillio au Chili.

La vue méritait bien tous les efforts de la grimpette dans la neige, et ça faisait Longtemps que je n'avais pas vu autant de neige amoncelée.

Dans un paysage presque tout blanc, on voit dépasser des Araucarias, de grands épineux qui forment une boule sur leur sommet. En contrebas, on aperçoit un lac aussi bleu que le ciel et au loin, tout blanc, le volcan Llaima.

The #MonkeyTree is the #hardiest species in the #conifer genus #Araucaria. Because of the prevalence of similar species in ancient #prehistory, it is sometimes called an #AnimateFossil.

Its #seeds are #edible, similar to large pine nuts, & are harvested by #Indigenous peoples in #Argentina & #Chile.

The tree has potential to be a #FoodCrop in other areas in the future, thriving in climates with cool oceanic summers. Like, #VancouverIsland & several coastal areas of the #PacificNorthwest.
The tree doesn't yield seeds until it is around 30-40 yrs old though.

Once valued because of its long, straight trunk, its current #rarity & #vulnerable status mean its wood is now rarely used; it is also #sacred to some #Indigenous #Mapuche.

The species is #protected under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meaning international trade is regulated by the CITES permitting system & commercial trade in wild sourced specimens is prohibited.

Really? This tree is a destination. It can be reached from a walk from the car park at Dunvegan Castle and across open moorland from the road to Portree.

Araucaria araucana, commonly called the monkey puzzle tree, monkey tail tree, piñonero, pewen or Chilean pine, is an evergreen tree growing to a trunk diameter of 1–1.5 m and a height of 30–40 m. It is native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina.  It is the hardiest species in the conifer genus Araucaria. Because of the prevalence of similar species in ancient prehistory, it is sometimes called an animate fossil. It is also the national tree of Chile. Its conservation status was changed to Endangered by the IUCN in 2013 due to the dwindling population caused by logging, forest fires, and grazing.

Yesterday I ascended the Sierra Nevada with a local guide. It was just a perfect day. Not too cold, just light winds, sunny, astonishing views and autumn colors. Gabby, my guide, did a great job. We had a lot of good conversations and I learned a lot of stuff. Did you know that you can eat Piñónes raw? Well, now you definitely know ;-). We just picked up some from the ground. (But truth has to been told - the are more tasty when cooked)
As we were faster than she had planned we had plenty of time to enjoy lunch, tea and the views on the summit just by ourselves. The first people we met ascending were us already descending.

At the front and at the bottom lie dead trees with its branches. On the right the bright red and yellow leaves of bushes and a small Araucaria. In the background the Sierra Nevada below a blue sky.
Looking south from the summit. On the left bottom half of the picture the snow covered glacier of the Sierra Nevada. on the right its rocky side. In the background the Llaima above the Lago Conguillío. Far in the background on the left the vulcano Lanin and in the center the vulcano Villarica.
Looking north from the summit. Again the east facing glacier. In the background the vulcan Lonquimay and a to its right side the Tolhuaca.
At the descend. The west facing rocks are covered with cristal clear ice which is shimmering in the sun. Below us a snow field. Farther below the yellows and reds of the chilean autumn.

Am heutigen #Fotomontag zeige ich Bilder, die ich gestern am #SilentSunday während der geführten #Pilzexkursion in der Essener #Gruga aufgenommen habe. Eine #Andentanne oder besser Chilenische #Araukarie (Araucaria araucana) hatte es mir aufgrund der Blattstruktur und des Besatzes mit einer Flechte, namentlich der Gewöhnlichen #Gelbflechte (Xanthoria parietina), besonders angetan.

Today's #PhotoMonday features pictures that I took yesterday on #SilentSunday during the guided #mushroom excursion in Essen's Gruga. I was particularly fond of an #Andenfir or rather Chilean #araucaria (Araucaria araucana) because of the leaf structure and the presence of a #lichen, namely the common yellow lichen (Xanthoria parietina).

Im Vordergrund sind die waagerecht vom Stamm abgehenden und in Quirlen von 5 bis 7 Zweigen zusammenstehenden Äste scharf abgebildet. Die jungen Zweige sind wie Äste und Stämme von jungen Bäumen dachziegelartig mit den sehr harten und ledrigen schuppenförmigen, glänzend dunkelgrünen Blättern besetzt. Die dreieckigen Blätter sind 2,5 bis 3 Zentimeter lang und 1,5 bis 2 Zentimeter breit. Sie sind scharf in einen braunen Dorn zugespitzt und an den Rändern etwas gelb. In the foreground, the branches extending horizontally from the trunk and standing together in whorls of 5 to 7 branches are shown in sharp focus. Like the branches and trunks of young trees, the young twigs are covered like roof tiles with very hard and leathery, scaly, shiny dark green leaves. The triangular leaves are 2.5 to 3 centimetres long and 1.5 to 2 centimetres wide. They are sharply pointed into a brown spine and slightly yellow at the edges. The leaves are arranged spirally on the twig.
