Cinnamon eating a snack.
Moments before this picture was taken, she was stuck in the "it's so good I have to eat it now, but it's also so good I have to hide it for later" loop.
Then she just decided to eat it.
Cinnamon having a bit of my porridge. It's her special morning treat, and she demands it, the little tyrant.
You can just see that her arm has been shaved because she had a mammary tumour removed last week.
She's recovering really well from the surgery, she's actually a lot more energetic now. I think the tumour had been bothering her more than I realised.
The girls have moved back into their now-upgraded, old-rat-friendly cage with new ramps and levels so they can move about safely. Old-lady rats love being at the top of the cage, but they don't always have the needed oomph to climb all the way up without a bit of help.
Dash is feeling cuddly today.
She's starting to get old all of a sudden. I'm not sure how old she is (she's a rescue) but probably almost 2.
My rats are in a temporary cage while their home is being de-rusted and fitted with ramps and pipes to help my old girls climb safely all the way to the top of the cage.
I've tried many different methods of creating ramps and levels but this is the best by far - cutting gutter downpipes in half to make levels that they can't easily fall off of, and closed pipes for the ramps between the levels. Easy to clean, not tempting to chew on.
I'll be installing hammocks and cloth safety levels as well, and plenty of cardboard boxes for them to tear up. It's still a bit stinky from being de-rusted and painted, so I'm going to wait another day or so before they move into their new-old home.
I hope they like it!
Jasper enjoying his breakfast. He's 3 years and 4 months old, ancient in rat years. He has a quiet life. Sleep, food, and the occasional cuddle. His ears are getting really big!
Eggs are Very Serious Business for Dash!
Jasper had a bath today. The human kind of bath with warm water, not the rat kind with tongue. Rats don't usually need help cleaning themselves, but he's getting very old and can't always reach his own butt.
Taking a break from writing to create a entertaining walk for my rats. If you peer very closely at where the pipe goes into the cage, you can just see Dash going in for the first time. And that's her in the plastic bin too, being all dramatic.
Getting some writing today, but keep getting distracted by the rattoes. That's Rose eating a noodle, and Rose again sandwiched between her sisters Cinnamon above and Dash below.
I'm so grateful to Rose. Every day I put her in Jasper's cage, and she snuggles with him.
Some days she spends the whole day with him, and some days she asks to be put back with her sisters after just a few hours. But she's always really gentle with the old boy.
I've finally got to the stage where I can put Rose in Jasper's cage, and they snuggle together. This is the first time Jasper has been able to cuddle with another rat since his brother died.
He's been in a seperate cage because the younger rats bully him, which is really sad as he adores them.
But it looks like Rose has had a change of heart and is accepting him. I think she even groomed him a bit!
I'll put her back in the big cage just now. She probably misses being with her sisters.
