It looks like Duolingo - for a couple of years now my go-to app for learning spoken languages - is putting profit and fad ahead of people and quality. Using AI to replace human language experts.
I'm out. Canceling my annual paid subscription and no longer giving them any data to work with.
Looking for good quality apps to get me up to basic conversational level. Willing to pay for quality and good employment practices.

Currently interested in #LearningArabic, #LearningFrench, and #LearningIndigenousLanguages, but will spend time on just about any shiny new language that comes along.
I've just started with #Mauril for French. https://mauril.ca/en/
It uses clips from Canadian media as the content to learn from. One thing I already love: it's the first app I've encountered that teaches *Canadian* French. In all my life so far, including in a *Canadian* school, I've only had European French in claims and learning apps!
@TimPhon yup, it is pretty nice. These textbooks also teach french from 'here' https://methode-parici.com/ also this youtube channel is super nice for quebec french https://maprofdefrancais.ca/
@TimPhon argh! It's only available in Canada
@csgordon I can imagine their reasoning, but it does seem like an unnecessary and arbitrary restriction.
@TimPhon this is very interesting. i might try it out. thanks!
