This is Tía María, who just turned 91. She's been a hard working woman all her life, and isn't planning on stopping any time soon.

A few weeks ago she took us to help harvesting her almond trees, which are scattered across tiny parcelas up in the Murcian mountains.

Don't let that lady's seemingly frail figure fool you - given the opportunities she'll beat the almonds of of that tree like no one else!

(more about almond harvest soon)

Californian #almonds are bad for the world:
- their farming destroys the soil that it uses;
- water shortage leeds to use of deeper, salinated water, which sometimes contains arsenic, a poison...
- used pesticides are killing bees.

And yet, 80% of the world's almonds come from California. Think about it next time you're at the supermarket buying almonds.

Mashed · The Real Reason Almonds Are Destroying California - MashedCalifornian almond groves produce 80% of the world's almond crops. In 2020, the California almond industry predicts it will churn out 3 billion pounds of the nut. Good news for the almond industry -- catastrophic news for the environment.

The great #medieval fair at #Stourbridge outside #Cambridge (cam.ac.uk/research/news/the-80) was commemorated last weekend at the #LeperChapel with dancing, singing, storytelling & craft stalls.

The #14thCentury accounts of the #LadyOfClare record purchases there over the years: salt, often; also furs & lambskins; smoked herring, cod & stockfish; rice & almonds. #Almonds were bought in great quantity, used by the pastry chef from Paris & to indulge the pet #parrots.

Went for a little walk, just me myself and I. It wasn’t long, only about a half mile and it took me nearly 20 minutes and my hips were very angry at me, but that’s okay. Stopped by the garden and the almonds are forming. I kind of love how they look like peaches that just got really confused about where they were headed.

#TulareLake was the largest lake west of the Mississippi.
You would think a #water reservoir in an arid state is something to protect.
But no.
People drained it, to grow thirsty crops like #almonds, plus #dairy cattle.

This winter, #California got hit by more than one #AtmosphericRiver; the #snow pack is deep. That's now melting.
The meltwater is refilling the lake. And the warm season hasn't even started yet.

Oliver Milman: US government approves use of world’s first #vaccine for honeybees: Hopes of a new weapon against diseases that routinely ravage colonies that are relied upon for food pollination

"The US is unusually dependent upon managed #honeybee colonies to prop up its food pollination, with hives routinely trucked across the country to propagate everything from #almonds to blueberries."
