TGI Fenster Freitag. Two tiny windows in a Martello Tower in Howth. So I guess it’s a bit of a Bloomsday toot too; although it’s a Martello Tower on my side of the city and not Buck Mulligan’s one on the Southside. #FensterFreitag #WindowFriday #FuinneogFriday #Bloomsday2023 #JamesJoyce #Howth #MartelloTower #Window #Ulysses #Dublin #Ireland #Mastodaoine

One of the many moments of quiet depth and feeling in Ulysses that catch you by surprise, and for me often on rereading. In this case it was listening to an audio recording of the Nestor chapter recently, and fully appreciating when Dedalus sees himself in the vulnerable, grubby orphaned boy standing at his elbow.
So many other moments like this have stayed with me in the decades since I first read the novel.
Happy Bloomsday.
Like him was I, these sloping shoulders, this gracelessness. My childhood bends beside me. Too far for me to lay a hand there once or lightly. Mine is far and his secret as our eyes. Secrets, silent, stony sit in the dark palaces of both our hearts: secrets weary of their tyranny: tyrants, willing to be dethroned.
(Nestor)
Happy #Bloomsday! We like to commemorate the day with an adaptation of Leopold's lunch: gorgonzola sandwich made with soda bread, with plenty of mustard, washed down with a glass of local Pinot Noir. #Bloomsday2023
