Evan Prodromou raises some very important points about what is missing currently in the Fediverse.

A lot of my friends can't leave Facebook because of groups. They have private groups for friends that are invisible to non-members, or semi public groups that non-members can see but not post in. And groups allow for self moderations. Those are all important features that the Fediverse is missing.

Scottish university agreed to monitor students for arms company

Extremely disappointing #Heriot-Watt University doesn’t respect, prioritise #students over corporations

The Uni will monitor student #chat groups and #discussion #forums for talk of any planned #protest, monitoring #CCTV for signs of #groups #gathering, and having an “enhanced” physical presence on the day to “help safeguard the #Raytheon employees attending.”

Bonfire, un projet que j'attendais depuis longtemps, est sorti aujourd'hui en version beta.

bonfirenetworks.org/posts/bonf

Would it be a bad thing if you could make private groups within the fediverse feed. Groups that are members only where you take a discussion away from the commons and into a private "room"?

Would this be abused to talk about people behind their back, or would it give people a safer space to speculate on things?

I keep feeling that such spaces are needed, but "followers only" isn't always the right way to separate people into discussion groups.

One thing everyone should realize when they go on to those places is that these are **not** centrally managed by a corporation which also means that these **cost money to run**

That means that you will have to fork money for it you won't get it for quote unquote free or you pay for it with your data, or your usage patterns

You will have to pay actual USD or EUR for them!

Here's an explainer why #groups (boost bots) are preferable to #hashtags for organizing a #group of people on #mastodon (or the #fediverse in general):

(in English and German; based on experience from the hangman-game group at @galgodon)

BTW: I've mentioned "a.gup.pe" (@guppegroups) in the text. Is anyone aware of alternatives that should be added?

I mean, the Fediverse already has Lemmy, KBin, and MBin.

So there's already an ecosystem of pre-built communities out there.

/kbin is dead. Has been since last year. The last instances that haven't moved to Mbin are withering away.

However, in the "Lemmy clone" category, there's also PieFed, and Sublinks is still in development.

Also, the Facebook alternative Friendica ("Facebook alternative" not as in "Facebook clone", but as in "better than Facebook") has had groups since its launch in, 2010, five and a half years before Mastodon. Hubzilla has had groups since 2012 when it still was a Friendica fork named Red. (streams) (2021) and Forte (2024) have groups, too. All four are part of the same software family, created by the same developer. And interacting with their groups from Mastodon is somewhat smoother than interacting with a Lemmy community.

On Friendica, a group is simply another user account, but with different settings: In "Mastodon speak", it automatically boosts any DM sent to it to all its followers. In reality, it's a little more complicated because, unlike Mastodon, Friendica has a concept of threaded conversations. (No, seriously, Mastodon doesn't have it. If you think Mastodon has it, use Friendica for a year or two as your only daily driver, and then think again.)

Likewise, on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte, it's another channel with similar settings.

Hey #fediverse, it's been a while now that I'm looking for this 🔥 #house #track that #pingu likes so much. Really hope that I'm connected to the right bubble of #musicnerds who can help me find the track #id. If anyone knows good #groups that this post should travel to, please do mention them. Thanks!

I am responding to another email chain.... Thinking to myself... I wish more of my friends/family are on mastodon. This email is exactly how I use mastodon. Same with a text message.

Only things missing are:
- Encryption on private toots.
- Ability to send files like a pdf.
- Groups. A group of contacts that can be saved as one name. Each contact can receive/respond/remove own contact from group.

Groups are not new to Pixelfed, we have webUI support but the feature wasn't polished enough for use, until now ✨

:pixelfed: Groups will be compatible with Lemmy, Mbin, Smithereen and other projects, and will resemble Facebook Groups in our official app!

Stay tuned, we'll be shipping the updated Groups support in the app and webUI this weekend 🚀
