The soundtrack for Silent Hill was composed by sound director Akira Yamaoka, who requested to join the development team after the original musician left. 🔄
In addition to the music, he was responsible for sound effect creation and audio mastering. 🎹

To differentiate #SilentHill from other games and to give it a cold, rusty feel, Yamaoka chose industrial music. 🏭
He did not watch game scenes but instead created the music independently from the visuals.

The Silent Hill developers wanted to create a game that would appeal to the emotions of the players. 🖤
To achieve this, the team introduced a "fear of the unknown" as a psychological type of horror. 🔦

The plot was intentionally made vague and occasionally contradictory to leave its true meaning in the dark, encouraging players to reflect on unexplained elements. ⁉️

1999's Silent Hill for PlayStation 1 uses a third-person view with real-time rendering of 3D environments. 🚶

To mitigate the limitations of the console hardware, the developers used distance fog and darkness to obscure the graphics and hide pop-ins, which, in turn, helped establish the game's atmosphere and mystery. 🌫️

The series' second installment, Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica, was released in Japan in 2007 and in both North America and Europe in 2009.

Though superficially similar to its predecessor in both aesthetics and style, Ar Tonelico II's battle system is new, removing the ability to jump and the platforming sections.

The game was praised in Japan, but many fans have criticized the US release for bugs and glitches.

Ar tonelico is a multimedia project series consisting of role-playing video games, manga and an anime.

The first game "Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia" was released in 2006 in Japan for PS2. 🇯🇵
In Europe it was released in 2007 in very limited quantities only in France, Italy, and Spain and as such European copies of the game are rare and the very existence of the PAL version remained widely unnoticed. 🇪🇺

If a game with a cartridge's memory size larger than 2MB is attached, the console will not run the lock-on game but booting up the standalone Sonic & Knuckles game instead. ↪️

The Sonic & Knuckles cartridge usually reads the second half of the attached ROM. As the ROM header is placed in the first half of the attached cartridge, it will not recognize it as a valid game. ❌

If the player inserts almost any other Mega Drive cartridge into the slot adapter, again a screen with Sonic characters and a scrolling text "No Way" appears. ✋

This time after pressing the A, B and C button at the same time the player gets to play only a single Special Stage without the password ability based on the serial number of the cartridge's ROM header data. 🔢

Attaching Sonic 1 to Sonic & Knuckles unlocks the Blue Sphere mini game, a collection of Special Stages in the same style of those in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. ⬇️

After starting the console a screen with Sonic characters and a scrolling text "No Way" appears. 🚫
While this screen is visible, pressing the A, B and C button at the same time opens the Blue Sphere menu. 🎮

Blue Sphere has 134,217,728 levels and a password feature. 🔢

If you attach Sonic 2 to the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on this unlocks "Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2", wherein the player can play the game using Knuckles and his abilities. ⬇️

Using these special moves, Knuckles can explore areas inaccessible with Sonic or Tails, where secrets such as extra monitors have been added. ➕

Sonic & Knuckles has a lock-on feature that allows players to open the hatch on top of the cartridge and insert a second one. ⬇️

When Sonic 3 is inserted, the player can play through both games as one, the originally intended Sonic 3 & Knuckles. ☑️
This features several changes to the games, such as slightly altered level layouts and the ability to play through both titles as Knuckles or Tails. 🦔

Sonic & Knuckles was developed in 1994 simultaneously alongside its predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog 3. 🔀
Both titles were planned as a single game until time constraints and cartridge costs forced the developers to split it. 💔

Therefore their gameplay is similar.
Both are 2D side-scrolling platformers with similar level design, graphics and game mechanics.
Unlike in Sonic 3, in Sonic & Knuckles the player chooses either Sonic or Knuckles to play. 🎮

This will be a thread about Sonic & Knuckles for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and its cartridge's Lock On feature. ⬇️

There is much to say about the game's background and the possibilities of the Lock On feature in regard to other games, especially the console's Sonic titles. 🦔💨

...The shown Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes debuted in arcades in 1998. 🤜🤛
Ports to the Dreamcast and PlayStation soon followed in 1999.
Rather than strictly using Street Fighter characters, the game included characters from other Capcom video game franchises, such as Mega Man, Morrigan, and Strider Hiryu. 🤼‍♂️

...and let the controller do the work. 🎮
Some of them even have autofire, that means the turbo mode is activated without holding the button down. 🔥

Later controllers would allow the user to adjust the speed of the turbo option. 🎚️

Turbo controllers for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis like the Sega MegaFire shown in the picture are very common, partly because the system had a large library of shoot-'em-ups in its first few years on the market. 🚀

Level 1-7 "Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy" in Yoshi's Island for SNES was translated to "Lustiges Sporen Drama" (engl. Funny Spore Drama) in the German version. 🇩🇪

This abbreviates to "LSD" and is considered to be a reference to the levels psychedelic, disorienting effects caused by touching the Fuzzies that serve as the level's English namesake. 💊

Some GameCube games with large amounts of data span two discs, such as Resident Evil 4, Baten Kaitos, and Tales of Symphonia. 💿💿

Some multi-platform games that fit on single discs for PlayStation 2 and Xbox had certain features removed in order to fit on GameCube Game Discs. ✂️ Full-motion video (FMV) scenes and audio clips have higher compression or lower quality to fit on a single disc. 🎞️
