the Ryde can't punch a hole into reality but it can create a sort of tear/cut in the "nylon fabric" of reality and than submerge partially into it like a submarine reducing its Mass in this universe and changing the needed energy dramatically so ships can travel faster than light. Most of this is achieved via the Anchor. The anchor is a part that remains in our part of this reality (it doesn't need to be a "real object" but simpler designs exist, modern ships project virtual ones). Underneath this dimensional/space itself tear the ships can travel extremely fast, but FTL comes from the universe, it itself doesn't "appreciate" tears in its nylons (show me one person that does, even goth punks may get upset if there newest one gets damaged first time) & trys to seal this tears thus pushing the anchor forward. But if your anchor sinks under the tear it simply seals away the ship & yes both has been weaponized

The RYDE itself. The Remscheid Theory Drive and the subsequent developed Slip/Slyde Portal teleportation system are sort of subspace tunnel usage. While the Slyde (or Slip) punches a hole through it for a short distance connecting 2 points in space that shouldn't exist next to each other and creates a doorway it's never a one way. So open your portal sidewise others from outside could enter, this is why it's usually projected parallel to the ground. But this has problems too.
Try to save your captain who is standing in a faceoff, just project it under that person... Unless you miss calculated the exact layer than you cut of body parts your captain may want to keep to not bleed to death like his feet. Contrary to the SLIP/Slyde the
