A small clump of 5 petaled hellebore flowers with purple shading grace the front of a school building. They have purple stems and are growing among small succulent groundcover plants.

The petals are technically sepals, something of interest only to botanists and flower specialists. I just now learned that most species of hellebores have flowers that face downwards. If you want to see their pretty markings, it's best to plant them where they'll be at eye height.

Luscious vanilla

A multi-petaled star magnolia flower opens on a cool spring day. The bottom of the petals are tinted light pink, but the rest are a fine French vanilla color. Time for ice cream! There are buds next to the flower, looking like little brown fuzzy mice. One bud is starting to open into another vanilla blossoms.

This one day a year and a half ago we went to the beach during a tropical depression and upon coming back from a little walk, noticed someone stuck a sunflower into the sand and it just stood tall and proud. Sometimes, you gotta be a sunflower plopped in the sand standing tall and proud, regardless of what storm is crashing up on your shores

A small rhododendron bush is covered with white to pink bell-shaped flower clusters in a front border by the Lutheran Church in our neighborhood. They're amid last fall's leaves and soon to be daffodils which are low to bloom this year. They're early bloomers, because rhodies usually bloom in May to June. They do seem to bloom here whenever the weather favors the, though. (Rhodies have 10 or more stamens, azaleas 5)

A close look at a pink camellia bush show an abundance of buds just waiting to open alongside the delicate pink rose like blossoms. The light hits the pink petals just right, making them look like China, colorful tasting with the dark green, glossy, dentate leaves.

A cluster of Oregon grape flower buds is going from tightly closed green to more open rose to almost open yellow. Soon happy pollinators will be visiting the blooms. Meanwhile, you can see the thorny holly-like leaves are changing from burgundy red to green.

Spring is creeping up on us. First I spotted the beginnings of osoberry flower buds then I spotted one that actually started to bloom in its tiny microclimate (Species: Oemleria cerasiformis. Probably male plant.)

So here it is. The first flowers in the floodplain forest, doing justice to their name - snowdrops. They're almost everywhere. Later, when it's warmer, more species will come, and then for about three weeks the lower level of the forest will be covered with the colours of flowers. But these are just the first ones while it's freezing and snowing.
