What it feels like to be a smaller and weaker power confronted with larger.

Evarist Bartolo, Malta's former Minister of European and Foreign Affairs, urges a shift toward a model where states “listen before they speak,” and where foreign policy is shaped by mutual respect, not bloc loyalty: pascallottaz.substack.com/p/th

Cognitive dissonance

Until February 2025, Europe had been a willing tool of US foreign policy. Realizing it just now, the rulers cannot change their belief in standing for good versus evil. So they choose to change their narrative from one of enlightenment to one of rearmament.

"In spite of all the grand-standing and posturing, Europe has been reduced to a geopolitical appendage of the United States, following Washington’s lead in prolonging the conflict while shouldering the costs. While the EU sees itself as a global moral authority, it has been sidelined in actual negotiations. Instead, peace talks are being brokered by the U.S. and China, with Europe playing no decisive role. Even within the European Parliament, there exists a near-religious belief in a narrative that contradicts basic military and economic realities."

Too often, new managers arrive with a 'there are no stupid questions' mindset—challenging everything, regardless of merit. While critical thinking is valuable, indiscriminate questioning disrupts expertise, wastes time, and fosters a blame culture rather than real progress.

💡 What's your take? Have you experienced a blank slate manager? How did it impact your organisation?

@ttarses Du hast m.E.

Some IT people work in an environment of fear. They’re afraid to do routine system maintenance that might take the system down for awhile.

The crazy thing is, scheduled maintenance downtime will be less impactful than unscheduled emergency downtime.

The solutions are to have upper management fully supportive of system maintenance, and a smoothly functioning change management process that includes mechanisms for incorporating patches and updates into the workflow.

If you WORK FOR a company with a culture of fear surrounding routine system maintenance downtime, do yourself a favor and look for a new job.

If you OWN OR MANAGE a company with a culture of fear surrounding routine system maintenance downtime, do yourself a favor and call me. I can turn it around.

You know that thing where you can see exactly how things could be better, but somehow the change just... doesn't happen?

You may even create goals, and a plan, and start out strong and then life (or work, or circumstances) get in the way, and your motivation fizzles out? Or, you encounter an obstacle that stops you in your tracks, that you just can't get past?

It's not just you. And it's not because you're not trying hard enough.

If you find Notepad++ on a computer in, say, Accounting, or HR – you should probably be concerned. There’s a good probability that the person who installed it has coding skills. And they installed it on that work computer because they’re using it to do something.
Maybe it’s innocent.
Maybe it’s beneficial.
But you won’t know until you investigate.

THE LESSON
Yes, you want to establish an approved software list, but that’s just Step One.
Step Two is identifying approved users.

Sounds to me like a #ChangeManagement exercise could link some initiatives, around those issues. Thinking of some process architecture stages, here. Including the time of welcoming discontent and, yes, providing care to some outmoded practices (the “hospicing” part of some models).

Just read that 2016 piece @dajb, which provided me with valuable insight about the UK context. Helped me pay attention to systemic differences around #PublicEducation.

The quickest, most effective, and reliable path to innovation starts with vulnerability.

Because those who present as vulnerable are usually viewed as authentic.

People who are authentic are seen as trustworthy.

We are open to being around, consuming more of, and collaborating with people whom we trust.

When people collaborate around a specific persistent or novel performance-challenge, the outcome is innovation.
