From a “Letters to Fred” review:

“We are witnessing in real time similar events to those that occurred in Germany 90 years ago. This work, like all other stories from the Holocaust, should serve as a stark warning to all of us that the horrors will never be a thing of the past unless we keep fighting to keep them there.”

LETTERS TO FRED

„Zwei Liedprogramme an einem Tag spannten einen Bogen von Lebenslust, Poesie und gerechtem Zorn am Vormittag zu trauerndem Andenken am Abend. Zwei Freundinnen erlebten dies gemeinsam, Megan Marie Hart auf den Bühnen, Joanne Herzberg im Publikum.“

LETTERS TO FRED: A Portrait of the Herzberg Family During the Holocaust
Song Cycle by Bracha Bdil

The terrible brutality of the Holocaust is so incomprehensible in its extent that it can only be understood on the basis of individual fates. This song cycle quotes from letters to the only survivor of the #Herzberg family from #Detmold.

On February 4, my friend tenor Ricardo Garcia* & I will sing for the sports club SV Darmstadt 98. Loved in the city and beyond, their fleur-de-lis logo is omnipresent in town, and they’re nicknamed Die Lilien (The Lilies).

I was very touched by their memorial march on Holocaust-Remembrance Day! And I think we have the best possible song for them on the 4th — I already know it will mean a lot to us all!

www.sv98.de“Never again!” – SV 98 memorial eventJanuary 27th marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. In memory of the victims of National Socialism, SV Darmstadt 98 organized a memorial walk from Schlossgartenplatz to Dr.-Karl-Heß-Platz. A wreath-laying ceremony including various speeches took place there.

"The Austrian Deaf community has been well organised and unified by a common language since the 19th century. But since only 10% of Deaf people have Deaf parents, therefore the transfer of language, the preservation of culture and identity and the handing down of the common history are especially fragile. Hence, documenting the experiences of older people and making them accessible for Deaf children and youth is all the more important. National Socialist rule brought forth changes for everyone. The Deaf community was in particular danger (less information, no alarms) and directly threatened by Nazi legislation (e.g. forced sterilisations). Courses of action taken then and ways to deal with memories today vary greatly, just like in the hearing society."

The evening recital is our world premiere of Bracha Bdil's Letters to Fred at Staatstheater Darmstadt, with pianist Giacomo Marignani.

Letters to Fred is the story of Fritz Herzberg, the father of my dear friend Jo, based on letters written to him during the Holocaust. This is a huge and momentous project for me, and one that I dreamed of for years.

Both of these programs are in honor of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

#EU / Relatives of Israeli hostages urge European Parliament to cancel invite to Israeli Minister over far-right ties and ethnic cleansing support

More than 40 relatives of Israeli hostages and victims of the October 7 massacre, along with European Jewish leaders, have called on the European Parliament to rescind an invitation to Israeli Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli. In a letter, they criticized Chikli for voting against the hostage deal, aligning with far-right European politicians, and supporting ethnic cleansing in Gaza and South Lebanon. The signatories argue that his presence at the International Holocaust Remembrance Day conference would undermine the event's values of human dignity and justice.

[…] "Such a position, which is deeply troubling, is incompatible with the human rights and dignity that should underpin Holocaust remembrance and education,"
