Regarding ADPList: I volunteered early on but will be leaving as a mentee due to the founder's unethical actions (plagiarism, gaslighting). While I value the connections I've made, I can't support the platform.
I volunteered for ADPList when it first launched, being Vancouver's 1st ambassador and cheerleader. They wanted us to host events locally and life happened so I didn't reply to their requests for "volunteer" work in 2024.
I still meet wonderful people from the platform (recently connected to 3 PM's for informational interviews), the ethics of being there now bothers me.
In my research, I found this platform by Chris Mason of Intelligent People, i hope it helps Mentors & Mentees alike:
W H E W i finally did it
- created my own polar graph in #pyqtgraph
- created a subclass that maps azimuth to theta (easy) and elevation to R (not hard, but not necessarily obvious for stereographic projection)
- used that to re-implement the faulty graph I made like....6 years ago? also had to find and rewrite a bunch of code to use a great-circle distance from a point rather than azimuth/elevation ranges #python #space #math
The original toot in this chain is from 1/3, so that's exactly two weeks of A B S O L U T E P A N I C on my part
I mean, it was my bug. And it's kind of a dumb bug. And it has been keeping me from my regular #coding and also from doing a good job as a #mentor for the super-fresh new-hire
But it's really #adhd #rsd perfectionism/terror that drove me for these two weeks. I could barely think straight. I should probably note this at my adhd evaluation on 1/30.

Good Evening fellow Tooteroonies !
The 1st #CyberMentoringMonday of the year is already ending.
If you’re looking for a #mentor or to learn more about #infosec or if you’re a professional just willing to give back to the community or to connect with peers, use this hashtag to #connect !
Happy Monday, Happy Week and Happy New Year!Don't forget to make this week full of kindness, positivity, knowledge, smiles and wisdom !
I'm in a weird position professionally and guess I am looking for a #mentor ? Maybe just someone more experienced than me to talk to and not necessarily some long term commitment of expectations? Growth just isn't going to happen where I'm at and I think I keep getting stuck in an under-/overqualified limbo.
Mainly work in #malwareanalysis #threatintel #detectionengineering with heavy #programming skills.
Always see #CyberMentorMondays does it do anything?
Calling #Drosophila #grad_students #postdoc and #pretenure #faculty to participate in FlyCROSS and be matched by a #mentor of your preferences to gain guidance to your unique needs !
Last January I wrote an article on the #Tutor #Mentor blog showing how @charlesgaba was raising millions for Dem candidates. I said "duplicate this" and raise money for youth serving organizations in your community.
The need will be greater now and in coming years. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2024/01/copy-this-idea-support-tutormentor.html
A quotation from Emerson, Ralph Waldo:
«
Our chief want in life is someone who shall make us do what we can. This is the service of a friend. With him we are easily great.

I've followed
https://mastodon.social/@harold and
@hrheingold for more than 15 years. Last week Howard drew my attention to Dave Winer, a digital pioneer, who's been blogging for 30 years!
I highlighted their work in my #Tutor #Mentor article at https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2024/10/dave-winer-blogger-for-30-years.html
Mentors in Tech (MinT) is a great organization that provides industry mentors to students at smaller and less-well-known colleges. I've been a #mentor for the past 3 years and overall its been a very rewarding experience for me*. MinT is well structured and accessible to mentors at all levels.
If you're in tech (intentionally broad) and looking for a way to give back, consider MinT!
* I declined for the 2024-'25 school year only because I just don't have the spoons.
Let's say you’re running #Apple #macOS 14.5 Sonoma on a MacBook 14-inch M1 Pro, with an Administrator account that has a standard set of #development tools and commonly needed casks installed via #homebrew. What is the #BestPractice for sharing access to the same set of #devtools and apps with another user on the same computer? Ideally we are not installing the tools twice, or giving root access to the other user. #security #programming #coders #momswhocode #mentor #kidswhocode #codeandcoffee
This was my #Tutor #Mentor blog post during the first week of June 2014. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2014/06/d-day-and-planning.html
I created this graphic many years ago to show the consistent, on-going, effort needed to draw attention & support to every youth #tutor #mentor orgs in #Chicago. View at https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2023/07/helping-youth-in-high-poverty-areas.html
If someone maintains a list of programs everyone can point to it.
I led two different volunteer-based #tutor #mentor program in Chicago from 1975 to 2011.
Recruiting volunteers and students and keeping them involved for multiple years was what made the program valuable.
I share some yearbooks in this post. These show some of the activities that helped with retention. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2024/04/retaining-volunteers-in-tutormentor.html
1) Overdue call with a #mentor from back in the day. His excitement over my current situation reminded me (in spite of whatever isn’t yet perfect) how good things are right now.
2) I get to see the kiddo #swim laps with a #MiddleSchool proto-team (kind of the work-it-out stage) tomorrow. 1st time seeing it for me.
3) My team at work really like each other, and that warms my heart.
Bonus: #PizzaNight!
About me:
