Raven<p>I don't know why but I never looked at the illumos based operating systems. I think I will change that and try out either OpenIndiana or SmartOS and compare them with Linux and BSD.</p><p>Areas I want to compare:<br>- Availability of software<br>- Simplicity of system management<br>- General system usage<br>- Security and Storage features</p><p>Are there any illumos users or admins out there with an idea on which things I should try out?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/illumos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/smartos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>smartos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/openindiana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>openindiana</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>unix</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/opensolaris" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opensolaris</span></a></p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>My friends, I'm so excited and happy to introduce a new project: the illumos Cafe!</p><p>The positive and constructive spirit of the BSD Cafe, created and maintained by all the friends who participated from day one in building a strong and friendly community, deserves to spread to other operating systems. Because there are other OSes that deserve attention, certainly more than they're getting right now.</p><p>Operating systems based on illumos (like SmartOS, OmniOS, Tribblix, OpenIndiana, etc.) are mature, stable, secure, and perfectly usable for a wide range of tasks. ZFS is native, zones are an excellent method for containerization, and bhyve and kvm coexist beautifully - and so much more, too much to list in a single post.</p><p>So from today, the illumos Cafe will stand alongside the BSD Cafe in creating a positive, respectful, and growth-oriented (but also relaxing!) environment, starting right here in the Fediverse with a Mastodon instance and a snac one.</p><p>I've written an introductory article about the project, including some technical details. I invite everyone interested to read it: <a href="https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18</span><span class="invisible">/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/</span></a></p><p>Choose your table, take a seat and enjoy your time at the illumos Cafe!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SysAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/illumosCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumosCafe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Community</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OSS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/illumos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SmartOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartOS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenIndiana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenIndiana</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ZFS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ZFS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/bhyve" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bhyve</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/kvm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kvm</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/snac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>snac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ITNotes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ITNotes</span></a></p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>I think it's time to write an <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a> for this account as well!</p><p>I'm Stefano Marinelli, Barista of the illumos Cafe and the BSD Cafe. I'm a technology and open source enthusiast, a strong advocate for <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a>, and against computer monoculture, even when it comes to open source solutions. </p><p>I've been active in the <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> for years and am a firm believer in it. I decided to found this Cafe to bring the positive spirit of the BSD Cafe to curious and passionate users of <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/illumos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumos</span></a> based operating systems (<a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/OmniOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OmniOS</span></a>, <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/SmartOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartOS</span></a>, <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/Tribblix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tribblix</span></a>, <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/OpenIndiana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenIndiana</span></a>, etc.).</p><p>I'll mainly use this account for content related to this instance and illumos-based operating systems, while my account at the BSD Cafe - <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>stefano@bsd.cafe</span></a></span> - remains my primary one.</p><p>For more information about the illumos Cafe, you can read the introductory post here: <a href="https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18</span><span class="invisible">/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/illumosCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumosCafe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.illumos.cafe/tags/BSDCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafe</span></a></p>

Felix Palmen :freebsd: :c64:<p>Just released: <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/swad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>swad</span></a> 0.7! 😎 </p><p>Swad is the "Simple Web Authentication Daemon". If you're looking for a solution to add cookie/form <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/authentication" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>authentication</span></a> to your <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/nginx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nginx</span></a> reverse proxy, or maybe even a <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/lightweight" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lightweight</span></a> alternative to <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Anubis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Anubis</span></a> which leaves the actual proxying to nginx, this might be for you! It is designed for use with nginx' auth_request, written in pure C, with minimal dependencies (zlib and, depending on build options, openssl/libressl and/or libpam), and compiles to a small binary (currently between 150kiB and less than 300kiB depending on compiler and target platform).</p><p>Swad should work on many <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/posix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>posix</span></a> (and almost) systems. It's actually tested on <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/FreeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD</span></a> (in "production" use, but on a very low-traffic private site), and quick functionality tests also done on <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> (<a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>) and <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenIndiana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenIndiana</span></a> (<a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Illumos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Illumos</span></a>, open-source <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Solaris" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Solaris</span></a> descendant).</p><p>As announced, this release doesn't bring any new features (in terms of WHAT it can do), but great improvements "under the hood", that should help performance at least on some platforms, see release notes for swad 0.7.</p><p>Read more, and download the .tar.xz (to build and install it 😆) here:<br><a href="https://github.com/Zirias/swad" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">github.com/Zirias/swad</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>

Not sure if I can reach any #illumos #omnios #openindiana people here, but here goes: does anyone know if there is a well maintained GCP image that could be used to run some flavour of illumos? PostgreSQL uses Cirrus CI with Linux, (Free|Open|Net)BSD, Windows, macOS images. illumos is a missing target!

#Poll: are you "dog-fooding" #BSD?

Unlike previous polls (:BlobCatBlush:) I have tried really hard to make sure the options make sense. Select the lowest item in the list that is true for you:

Of the ten options, the first four are for those that don't use BSD regularly (let's say at least once per week).
The fifth option ("VPN/server") is for someone who uses BSD on a server they manage, but don't have physical access to.
The sixth ("at work") through eighth ("secondary laptop/desktop") is for those who regularly use some variant of BSD, but not as a primary daily driver.
The ninth and tenth options are for "dog-fooding"

Oh, right, and I'm sorry, but it really must need be said: MacOS, iOS, and other Apple products do not count. Sorry again. I will count any FOSS BSD-like OSes like #OpenIndiana, though.
I will also count retro commercial Unixes, if you're actually daily-driving them. ;)

This is the basic analysis that additionally to Advocacy we the #OpenIndiana maintainers have made for #illumos Companies sell products, thus developers get Jobs that attract some hobby development (but a tiny amount) and thus allow the system to branch out into new areas with other companies then forming there (hopefully) target those efforts and you get results. @dexter s efforts with Jails(plus zones)/ZFS and bHyve are a good example

⚠️ #BSDPub Weekly Meeting ⚠️

Our first weekly will start on the 25th, April 2024 at 7 PM (GMT+2).

You can find all the details on the #BSDCafe wiki:
https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub

For the first one, I already created a small agenda (https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub-meeting-minutes-2024-04-25). You are highly encouraged to modify and extend this, as well as upcoming agendas!

Overview:
Day: Thursdays (weekly)
Time: 7 PM - 8 PM (GMT +2)
Where: https://meet.gyptazy.ch/BSDPub (Jitsi)
Infos: https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub
Agenda: https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub-meeting-minutes-2024-04-25
Info: No recordings, no deep tech dives (keep it simple, we have calls for the details, no pressures to anyone, have fun and enjoy)

When I started the poll to ask for interests in such a meeting I wasn’t sure that even more than 5 people would be interested. I’m happy to see this amount of interested BSD users. I’m aware of the different timezones and it might make sense to have a second timeslot. This one mostly covers the European and near-east users. I’m happy to hear suggestions regarding preferred timeslots for the US, Asia,… so far, I’m happy to see at least a few of you next Thursday in the call!
