AstaPatchwork skirt is done!

I have no idea how many squares I cut and sewed for this, but each square was 11x11cm, the waist is about 1,6m and the hem about 4m.

I tried to use similar muted colours both from my own stash and the scrap bins at work. There's one green patch at the back that doesn't match and I hate that! It was originally at the front and I ended up undoing that entirely to move it to the back. 😅

Last picture is there to show you that it has POCKETS!

Ps. FanCityKnits 🇺🇦🧶
Finished something a few weeks ago. And as always: no good pictures of me wearing the thing exist.

It's a knit shirt, based on the pattern "Green Machine" from an older #knitty issue. Love to Sew PodcastIf she could only sew one thing, Helen would choose: denim! 👖❤️

In this week's episode, we share a bunch of listener answers to the question, "If you could only sew one thing, what would it be?" And, of course, we share our own answers, too! Helen made an excellent choice. Denim is sturdy, but it wears in beautifully. It comes in every shade, but the indigo ones are the best. And it's so satisfying to finish it with beautiful topstitching. This episode is all about a lesser-known fiber: hemp!

It’s super environmentally friendly, breathable, antibacterial, and has great body and texture. We talk a bit about hemp’s long history, how it goes from plant to fabric, and what to sew with it. Plus, we answer a listener question about constructing woven garments with a serger and we share listeners' sewing machine names!

Have you ever sewn with hemp?

Christine Millar (aka Sewstine) is a machine embroidery wizard! 🪄

In this week's episode, we ask her all of our burning machine embroidery questions. How does she design her own embroidery files? How long do the embroideries take? What stabilizer does she use? Does she have to babysit the machine the whole time? She answers them all, plus tells us about costuming events, her fave features of historical costumes, and her path to historical costuming.

Have you ever done machine embroidery?

Wearing Ease vs. Design Ease 📏

Ease is the extra width and length that pattern designers add into their pattern pieces. Wearing ease is the minimum ease that you add so that people can move around in their clothes. Design ease is added just for the look of it! For example, in Helen's most recent design, the #FalconerPants, there is minimum wearing ease from the waist to the hips - then there is design ease added to the legs to create the barrel shape!

To learn more about ease and how you can make it work for you, listen to this week's episode!
