I have a whole bunch of marine puns in a different language that I doubt more than 1 other person at work would understand.

In Taiwanese / Hokkien,

‘Hae’ means shrimp
‘Heh’ means fish

So since I was a child my cousins and I have always been saying shrimp shrimp shrimp or fish fish fish for ‘hehehehe’ laughing

It was meant to be

#228 is a significant date in Taiwan's history. To commemorate this time in Taiwan's historical consciousness, many people choose to fast in remembrance of the cruelty of those times. For 24 hours, drinking only water, let us meditate and educate people around us so that we may find better ways to take action in this world. As we feel our hunger, let us be reminded to share the stories of Taiwan's past.

台灣人畫圖
Taiwanese people drawing paintings
When going through my father's old books, i found this collection of works by famous Taiwanese painting artists (台灣畫壇名家作品集) volume 1 and 2. Shared are two sample paintings from the 1930's.

*I would use 一張圖 vs 一幅畫 yet I am not entirely sure what is the difference between 圖 and 畫🤔
But according to wiki dictionary both classifiers are acceptable 👇

圖: diagram; plot, chart; map; picture; image (acceptable classifier: 張/幅 ).

畫: drawing; painting; picture (acceptable classifier: 張/幅 )

This poem (si/詩) "Nahuy People from the Cloud" by @c.j.andersonwu shares the struggle of the gûan-tsū-bîn community. Nahuy, or called Sky-Pointing Rock, is a tribal community of indigenous Atayal people from Taiwan, where the people bravely defended their lands, culture, language, and traditions under decades of oppressive colonial rule.

@benjamingeer @chu what I find interesting is that you have specific elder aunt and younger aunt title, not sure about other #Hokkien speaker but in my family we dont do this
Dad's sister are all 阿姑, but use birth order to differentiate them as 大姑,二姑 the same goes with mum's sisters 阿姨
Tho we also use 嬸 for the wife of dad's younger brother, so 阿嬸. One thing is unique in Hokkien perhaps is the wife of dad's elder brother: 阿姆. Another is some Taiwanese will call mum 伊阿, 姨阿, 阿姨阿, 阿伊阿

This song/music video is a beautiful tribute to the people who live all kinds of lives in Taiwan.

Excellent news. I recently completed a six month online program with a Taiwanese language teacher in Kaohsiung. It was very good for me as I already read Chinese characters and speak Taiwanese as a heritage speaker. I constantly despaired that it would seem so insurmountable for someone to pick it up from scratch. Gotta check out the programs at Berkeley, close to home
